The Mineral Museum on the campus of Montana Tech in Butte includes a display of minerals found in the Butte area.
According to the display:
“Boxwork bornite is a variety of bornite, a copper iron sulfide. The term boxwork is a textural term and refers to the intricate pattern of box-like veins as seen in this specimen. This texture was formed when a mineral such as calcite was surrounded by the bornite and later dissolved to leave the boxwork of bornite.”
