• Federal judge smacks down Mississippi abortion restriction:
A federal judge Tuesday struck down Mississippi’s ban on abortions after 15 weeks of gestation, blasting the state for passing a law it “knew was unconstitutional” and wasting taxpayer dollars defending it in court.
Governor Phil Bryant said as he signed House Bill 1510 on March 19: “We are saving more of the unborn than any state in America. And we’ll probably be sued here in about a half hour … and that will be fine with me; it’s worth fighting over.”
• Time growing short to get serious in addressing the climate crisis:
Greenhouses gases that trap heat and drive climate change have reached a record high, the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced on Thursday.
Gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide absorb heat and radiate energy that warms the surface of the Earth. According to the WMO, the last time CO2 levels were as high as they are now was 3-5 million years ago, when surface temperatures were 2-3°C warmer and sea levels were 10-20 meters higher.
Perhaps even more alarming is there is no sign of a reversal of the trend, the organization found.
MIDDAY TWEET
• Conservative group tweets that same-sex kiss at Macy’s parade broke millions of children’s innocence: ForAmerica’s tweet went on to say “@nbc and @Macys just blindsided parents who expected this to be a family program, so they could push their agenda on little kids.” Twitter responded that “love is love” and not “a political agenda.” “It was a family program. Not all families look the same. It’s good that all children see that.” “Love is a family program.” “All those millions of small children wouldn’t see a single thing wrong on that screen, until their parents start telling them they should be seeing otherwise. Teaching your child to judge, demean and hate other people is the ONLY problem here!”
• Oil prices fall to their lowest level in more than a year.
• Rep. Adam Schiff vows a “deep dive” into Trump’s financial ties to Saudi Arabia: The remark from the man on the verge of becoming chairman of the House Intelligence Committee came in an interview with Washington Post columnist Greg Sargent. “There are a whole set of potential financial conflicts of interest and emoluments problems that Congress will need to get to the bottom of. Certainly if foreign investment in the Trump businesses is guiding U.S. policy in a way that’s antithetical to the country’s interests, we need to find out about it.” On Wednesday, The Daily Beast reported that the committee is planning to hire money-laundering and forensic-accounting experts as part of the probe into Trump's finances. It won’t just be the Saudi-Trump connection. Schiff also has plans to dig into Trump’s relationship with Deutsche Bank, the giant German financial operation tainted by money-laundering connections.
