Yet from the ashes, trees of life...
May remembrance of the names and lives of those gone before us be a light to guide us onward.

To all the moving stories of Americans’ response to the tragic events in Pittsburgh… and in support of the Tree of Life - Or L’Simcha community, we can add:
The 72-bell carillon in the Gothic tower of Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago is the single largest musical instrument ever built. Recitals featuring a range of music are performed every weekday evening while school is in session, ringing out over the campus.
On Friday, on the eve of the Jewish Sabbath, the largest bell rang out eleven times, once for each of the worshipers who perished, and the carillonneur performed the melody of the prayer Etz Chayim (Tree of Life).

Mourner’s Kaddish in English Translation
Glorified and sanctified be His name throughout the world
which he has created according to His will.
May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days,
and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon;
and say, Amen.
May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.
Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored,
adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He,
beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that
are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.
May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us
and for all [nations]; and say, Amen.
He who creates peace in His celestial heights,
may He create peace for us and for all [nations];
and say, Amen.
The dvar/drash for this shabbat was A Jewish Response to the Tragedy in Pittsburgh by A DC Wonk, 2 Nov 2018.
As many know, Iranian refugee Shay Khatiri raised over $1m for needs of victims and community of Tree of Life-Or l’Simcha, and Muslims Unite for Pittsburgh Synagogue over another $¼m including ongoing Muslim-Jewish projects in solidarity and dialogue. The latter group is also the only fundraiser I’ve heard for Jeffersontown Kentucky racism victims Vickie Jones and Maurice Stallard, killed that same day, and their families’ and community needs — so far it’s a smaller endeavor, so please see what donations you can manage for Jeffersontown there or by whatever route you prefer.

To close this week of observance, remember what the thousands proclaimed at the Tree of Life vigil that terrible first night…
