Received this e-mail today from former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean’s (D. TN) gubernatorial campaign:
Defending workers has always been a priority. Often the discussion focuses on creating good-paying jobs and workplace safety, but a recent news report has shed light on a different, but equally troubling, workers’ rights issue: wage theft.
Wage theft can take many forms, including paying an employee less than minimum wage, forcing them to work off the clock, or refusing to provide overtime pay. It’s a big problem, and it’s made worse by how hard it is to enforce the laws put in place to stop it.
Tennessee is one of only seven states that doesn’t have any investigators to help victims of wage theft recoup their hard-earned money. That needs to change.
Will you sign your name and support an end to the predatory practice of wage theft?
This has a devastating impact on families who are cheated out of income, and it has a devastating impact on Tennessee’s economy as a whole. Nationwide, an estimated $15 billion is lost annually to wage theft.
As Governor, I would commit resources to stopping this predatory practice and work with state officials, including the Tennessee Department of Labor, to recover workers' stolen pay. I believe this is an issue that will garner bipartisan support -- there is no good reason to keep hard-earned money out of our workers’ pockets.
Will you join me in this fight for justice? Sign your name to support an end to the predatory practice of wage theft.
Thanks,
Karl Dean
