Just 24 hours later, that thing Donald Trump blurted out about militarizing the U.S. border with Mexico is official and moving toward reality. The National Guard is being deployed.
[Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen] Nielsen told reporters during the White House press briefing that Trump “will be signing a proclamation to that effect today.”
“The president has directed that the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security to work together with our governors to deploy our National Guard to our southwest border to assist the border patrol,” Nielsen said.
All the people who have been deeply worried about the lowest levels of border crossings in decades—you know, the ones who presumably also check under the bed and behind the shower curtain for brown people every night—are doubtless feeling much safer now.
