In WAYR?, I note what I’m reading and comment...you note what you are reading and comment. Occasionally, I may add a section or a link related to books.
The Complete Essays by Michel de Montaigne- II.11- On cruelty.-Another long and detailed chapter that I will report next week.
The Complete Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle- The Hound of the Baskervilles.- More on this next week.
I am reading:
The Three Evangelists by Fred Vargas- Started digging into this mystery on the way back home from Louisiana...I like the character development in the novel to this point but I am kind of fearful that having three historians (of different historical eras) and a disgraced former police officier might be too many ‘’detectives’’ on one case.
Cosmopolitianism: Ethics in a World of Strangers by Kwame Anthony Appiah- The ethical discussions here about various phases of sometimes very different cultures are becoming increasingly complex and I find myself slowing down to really take in the arguments...the basic gist of it seems to be that far too often assumptions about what and how other cultures think and do things are based on our own cultures...the question being posed is whether a ‘’cosmopolitian’’ acceptance of other cultures will work out...and at this point (almost halfway through the book), Appiah seems not to be too sure of that...although he is sure that a ‘’cosmopolitian acceptance’’ is a whole lot better than ignorance.
