In case you’re not up on your latin, Kevin Drum has repurposed Carthago delenda est to hand down his verdict on what we should do with the Republican Party. He is responding to well-meaning people suggesting Democrats should back off a little on the confrontation. This is his explanation for why he is of that opinion:
Today, the Republican Party exists for one and only one purpose: to pass tax cuts for the rich and regulatory rollbacks for corporations. They accomplish this using one and only method: unapologetically racist and bigoted appeals to win the votes of the heartland riff-raff they otherwise treat as mere money machines for their endless mail-order cons.
Like it or not, this is the modern Republican Party. It no longer serves any legitimate purpose. It needs to be crushed and the earth salted behind it, while a new conservative party rises to take its place...
Read the whole thing. There’s a cartoon at the top of piece with an elephant in a hospital bed and a caption “Not Dead Enough Yet.” While I suspect part of this may be from Drum having a reaction to his chemotherapy, I can’t say his opinion does not have merit.
Besides, at this point it’s self-defense.
UPDATE: Kevin Drum spells out exactly why he is at this point.
