Having a strong economy that works for everyone is one of Vangie Williams’ top priorities for VA-01, USA
This past Monday was Labor Day. For many people, the holiday has come to signify the end of summer; school is now in session, we’re in the final days of outdoor barbecues, and for our most fashionable friends, it’s no longer acceptable to wear white clothing. But none of those things are what Labor Day is really about.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a holiday created on behalf of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It’s a yearly tribute to the contributions workers have made to building and strengthening our country.
Labor Day is the idea that workers are stronger when they advocate for themselves and each other. The holiday exists because of organized labor and those who came before us fighting for a living wage, an eight hour work day, safer working conditions, and a ban on child and convict labor.
Sadly, we’re still dealing with some of these issues today. American workers are still fighting for proper benefits and wages that reflect the true value of their efforts – instead of lining the pockets of corporate executives.
Many are still fighting for the right to organize and collectively bargain, while too many Americans are still trying to get equal pay for their work. Others are striving for the right to not be incorrectly classified as independent contractors when they’re really employees.
An economy that works for everyone means workers can support themselves and their families. That means an economy that allows for:
- all workers to be paid a living wage;
- equal pay for equal work;
- paid family leave, sick leave and job protection; and
- enforcing and expanding laws that protect workers from discrimination in the workplace – regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation.
Hardworking people should also have access to affordable child care, quality healthcare and be able to comfortably retire.
Having a strong economy that works for everyone is one of my top priorities for the 1st District and why I recently received the endorsements of the Virginia AFL-CIO and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Virginia 512.
I hope everyone reading this will join me in doing what we can to support American workers. If elected, I know I will certainly do everything in my power to make sure our economy works for all of us – not just a select few.
