The conservative party won yesterday in a landslide in the UK. The same conservative party that supports single payer universal healthcare, a ban on guns, 12 months maternity/paternity and free daycare. They also raised the minimum wage four years ago. They even believe in science like man-made climate change and have imposed laws and regulations to try to curb its effects, including Britain's own "Green Deal." Unlike here, you don't routinely see British conservatives on TV lecturing about wedge issues like the "sanctity of marriage" or abortion, and they're generally against capital punishment. They also don't go around parroting conspiracy theories concocted by Putin. And finally, 64% of the country is pretty much repulsed by Trump and only 21% have a favorable view of him.
Democrats would do well to keep these things in mind when people, yet again, invoke the false equivalency that they should temper their own beliefs. The people of Britain are not all that different from the people of America. Both support similar things, like the ability to lead a respectable life without being taken advantage of by greed and corruption. The difference here is not in the people, but in the political parties. The people of America overwhelmingly want all of the things listed above that are supported by the conservative party in Britain. It just so happens that, in America, the only party advocating for those same things happens to be called the Democratic Party.
