December 15, 1998:
The US House of Representatives releases the report that recommends impeachment for William Jefferson Clinton. And the rest, as they say, was history. The House impeached. The Senate chose to censure. And then the country went back about its business.
I mean, it was neither the end of the Clinton presidency nor the Clinton influence in Democratic politics. Of course, maybe it was Clinton fatigue that made the 2000 election. Who’s to say?
But first, a word from our sponsors ...

The Clinton legacy is a complicated thing in US politics. For many, the Clintons were mold breaking, change making breaths of fresh air. For others, it was a “modern marriage” and all of the social ills that the term associated with.
One thing is for certain. The whole Bill Clinton/Lewinsky affair riveted the nation’s attention for a significant amount of time. And boy, was it salacious. Talking heads worried about what they would tell their children. Others lamented the moral end of the US position in the world.
One thing is for sure. The world didn’t end. Although perhaps these things opened the door for a foul mouthed, philandering, walking boast on a stick to become president.
And now, 19 years later, we get to watch it all over again.
I have no idea what will come of this impeachment and Senate trial. Maybe more people will switch parties. Maybe some will break ranks and vote across the aisle. Who’s to say. This may become long and ugly. Or it could be short and ugly.
For sure, it will be ugly.
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
