Prosecutors filed the first criminal charges in the organized election fraud in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, with the Republican campaign operative at the center of the fraud hit with seven felony charges. Leslie McCrae Dowless is facing three counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice, and two counts of possession of absentee ballots. But no word yet on charges for Mark Harris, the candidate who hired him despite a warning—from Harris’ own son—that Dowless was breaking the law to deliver votes.
The fraud-marred election, in which Harris had a narrow lead, has been set aside, and Harris has said he won’t run in the do-over. But that’s not nearly enough punishment when we’re talking about someone who hired an operative known to be engaging in shady practices, in this case illegally collecting and forging absentee ballots. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman hinted at a possible move in the direction of more when she said her office’s “very large-scope” investigation would be looking at “who was aware of and helped finance these fraudulent absentee ballot activities.” If that doesn’t mean the guy who hired Dowless after being told he was up to no good …
