Ruminations
Good News: We bring it, we make it.
The Good Gnus group is a community of readers, writers, activists, and supporters. We begin gathering every day at 7 a.m. ET to celebrate national good news. Our most active members are of course a subgroup of members of Daily Kos, whose Front Pages display the words “News, Community, Action.” However, you don’t have to be a member of Daily Kos to be a Newsie.
We are realists. We know that we live in a world where active and nefarious decision-makers do very bad things and create anxiety in us, yet we choose to focus on the good news that people create around the country. Sometimes we ourselves create Good News. Together we are strong.
NotNowNotEver on our Resistance to certain berries
One of the funnier (in a decidedly sarcastic way) aspects of life is that there don’t seem to be a lot of easy answers. As long as a portion of society insists on being me-first, zero-sum, greedy dingleberries, we can’t even get to moving forward together. We have to outnumber them (which we do), shout them down (which we are doing), convince their children (which we are doing); vote them out (which we are doing) and wait for them to die (which we are doing). Resistance works. It just takes time.
GoodNewsRoundup: Justice Is Coming For Trump, and He is Terrified: Saturday's Good News
The last part of her introduction:
We have to make sure that love wins.
We won’t ever get rid of hatred and fear in the world, but we can use the light of our love to make it scurry back into the corners where it has less chance of spreading and less chance of causing pain. Right now those with hate in their hearts feel like they have support from the highest office in the most powerful nation. That must end. We must end it.
We have to do everything that we can to elect someone who speaks with love and acceptance in 2020. We just have to.
The good thing is, I know we can do this. I know based on the power of our movement, the inescapable thunder of a justice department moving towards the truth being revealed, and our amazing performance in the elections of 2018.
We’ve got this. Lets do it together.
I started out on the Front Page, and every article just kept getting worse. Switched over to the Rec List, and there it was: The world-famous Good News Roundup. Again, I need this positivity like I need air. ALL of what you say is true and accurate. The Good News Roundup is a light that draws like-minded together. This is the way that shows how to go forward.
Every commenter in this diary is an exponential counterweight to the lies and hate. Together we are a block that can't be denied, and, trust me, on a quantum level these waves go out to the universe, influencing much more than you can see. There soon will be a measurable effect. Strike that; there is already a measurable effect. See the above Good News Roundup!
It's so difficult to read the horrors on a daily basis, and I'm torn. So I do read but do not dwell. I feel I have to be aware of the negative. Ignorance can't possibly be desirable, can it? I mean, that's how this shitshow got started and is maintained, through hate, fear, and ignorance.
So, that's why the GoodNewsRoundup group is so very vital. We are aware but absolutely not going to succumb to the negativity. Thanks, all of you, and have a good week!
We stand in Solidarity #MyMosque
Our brothers and sisters struggle for justice and equality alongside us. We stand in solidarity with Muslims. White supremacy is immoral and wrong and the worldview of cowards.
The Imam at Jumu'ah [Friday prayer] said:
"A message (Islam) that challenges injustice and inequality is destined to receive hostility at the hands of those who profit from injustice and inequality."
Pay attention to those who rush in, giving care
“Abdul Aziz, who says he left Afghanistan as a refugee when he was a boy, is being hailed as a hero after confronting the gunman who attacked his New Zealand mosque. When the gunman advanced toward the mosque, Aziz ran outside screaming "Come here!"
Who Won the Week?
Our most famous and oldest (in kos years) Gnusie, Bill in Portland Maine, long may he prosper, lets us borrow the results of his spelunking through inky caverns (researching actual newspapers for Good News). Bill hung the following 10 items on his Who Won the Week? poll in Friday’s Cheers and Jeers. Almost 2,900 people voted in that poll, and many of them were not bots. Please enjoy Bill’s on-point analysis and wit, vote in his poll, Rec his diary, get on his bandwagon, send him a donation, and earn his blessing.
Bill has finished 6 months of chemotherapy. His bloomin’ docs shot the last bunker bomb into Bill’s bloodstream for 48 hours straight, starting on Monday last. Maths: 12 treatments, alternating weeks → about 24 weeks → 6 effin months! { { { { We love you, Billy } } } } [Cheers and Jeers archive and future editions here. He posted his first Cheers and Jeers on December 10, 2003!] Way, way more than 2 thanks to the wicked wizard of wit, Willhelm von kosland!
And now for this week’s Good News trove:
- Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, 16, and the hundreds of thousands of kids from over 110 countries who skipped class to join in one of the biggest environmental protests in history
- Judge Amy Berman Jackson, for adding four more years to Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort's jail time, and the State of New York for filing 16 new felony charges against him
- The House and Senate, for overwhelmingly rejecting Trump's border "national emergency" because it's nothing but a power-grab based on a hoax
- The 737 inmates on California’s death row, as Gov. Newsom signs an order placing a moratorium on executions
- Gun control advocates, as the Connecticut Supreme Court rules that Remington can be sued over how it marketed the Bushmaster rifle that killed 20 kids and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School
- District Judge Dana Sabraw, for expanding his authority over thousands more children separated from their parents at the border, adding pressure for more unifications
- Reps. Stacey Plaskett and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, for destroying zombie Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in Oversight Committee hearings on the citizenship question he's trying to add to Census
- Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Happy Birthday, Notorious RBG!
- The First Department of the New York State Appellate Division, for ruling that President Trump CAN be sued in "Apprentice" contestant Summer Zervos' sexual misconduct case
- The advertisers who are bailing left and right on the Fox Propaganda Network after more disgusting bile from Tucker Carlson and Jeanine Pirro aired this week
Spoiler Alert … Spoiler Alert … Greta Thunberg and the hundreds of thousands of kids who joined one of the biggest environmental protests in history 28%, the House and Senate rejected the "national emergency" 21%, Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that Remington can be sued over how it marketed the Bushmaster rifle that killed 20 kids and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School 14%. Too bad there’s no all-of-the-above choice. What a week!

Mokurai: ‘Hold on now. The chart up top here says that the world passed 0.1 terawatt in 2007. The chart also clearly shows exponential growth. So, (mumble, mumble, waves hands, mumbles some more) three terawatts in the next five years? And another 10 in the twelve years after that? Hey, that’s starting to approach the 16 TW or so we are looking for to save the world. Along with fixing agriculture, industrial chemistry, and a few other things.
‘We don’t actually know with any precision. But I’ll take it, whichever it is.
The International Energy Agency says renewable energy could make up over a quarter of global electricity generation by 2020.
A Future Without Fossil Fuels? by Bill McKibben — New York Review of Books
- 2020 Vision: Why You Should See the Fossil Fuel Peak Coming: A report by Kingsmill Bond
- A New World: The Geopolitics of the Energy Transformation: A report by the Global Commission on the Geopolitics of Energy Transformation
“Over the last decade, there has been a staggering fall in the price of solar and wind power, and of the lithium-ion batteries used to store energy. This has led to rapid expansion of these technologies, even though they are still used much less than fossil fuels: in 2017, for instance, sun and wind produced just 6 percent of the world’s electric supply, but they made up 45 percent of the growth in supply, and the cost of sun and wind power continues to fall by about 20 percent with each doubling of capacity. Bond’s analysis suggests that in the next few years, they will represent all the growth. We will then reach peak use of fossil fuels, not because we’re running out of them but because renewables will have become so cheap that anyone needing a new energy supply will likely turn to solar or wind power.” (See Dartagnan's The end of oil and fossil fuels is coming faster than we realize, but it still may be too late)
