a lot has been said about comments Pete Buttigieg made in January regarding some of Hillary's approach to counteracting Trump's "Making America Great Again" slogan. I am writing this as a self professed Hillarite as you can read in my Diaries and comments from last primary and election.
This was the comment Mayor Pete referenced to
Pete made a comment on a Washington Post interview that many of my fellow Hillary supporters considered a jab
Nick Merril, a Clinton Spokesperson and advisor had this to say
Today , in Indiana , he addressed the issue in a CNN Interview
"Just to make this clear, I think America would be a much better place if she were President," Buttigieg said. "That's why I voted for her and that's why I campaigned for her, and I have enormous respect for Secretary Clinton."
Specifically responding to Merill's comment :
"...in the industrial Midwest, people perceived the 2016 Democratic candidate "as basically saying that everything was just fine, and we should just believe in the system. And that was unconvincing."
"And so even though people knew that the President was not a great character, I think a lot of folks voted for him just to kind of burn the house down because the system had let us down in so many ways," he continued.
"That's the point that I'm concerned with," Buttigieg said. "It's not a knock on any individual. It's a concern about how we can take the lessons of the last election and apply them to get a better outcome in the next election."
I think tone matters when commenting, I think we have to learn from past mistakes. I don't beleive Hillary was a flawed candidate at all, I mourn her louse till now. But if we are not going to be able to self reflect where we might have misunderstood the electorate, where we can improve, and how to speak to the majority of voters (I am in no way advocating converting or pandering to Trump Base), then we should listen to other opinions, specially those who are not from states we usually win or won last election.
