House Ways and Means Committee chairman Richard Neal has issued subpoenas to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and IRS commissioner Charles Rettig to provide President Donald Trump's tax returns, with a May 17 deadline.
"While I do not take this step lightly," Neal said in a statement announcing the subpoenas, "I believe this action gives us the best opportunity to succeed and obtain the requested material. I sincerely hope Treasury Department will furnish the requested material in the next week so the committee can quickly begin its work."
Neal made his first request for Trump's personal and business tax returns dating from 2013 to 2018 on April 3, a request Mnuchin denied just this week.
