On Friday, The Daily Beast caught up with the GoFundMe-funded “We Build the Wall” and checked in to see how many miles of barrier the $20 million they had collected had generated since the project started taking in cash last year. The answer, to the surprise of no one outside the Trump fans who donated, turns out to be zero. And it seems likely to stay that way.
The group, founded by amputee veteran Brian Kolfage and featuring such conservative luminaries as run-out-of-Kansas Kris Kobach, promised that it would “break ground” on construction sometime in April. Then by May 1. But ground remains profoundly unbroken. And, as The Washington Post reports, some of those who donated to the cause of hurting immigrants, uglifying the border, and pwning liberals are starting to be … a bit concerned, that they might, just might, have been taken.
In a March interview, Kolfage promised that the golden shovels would come out some time in April. But he couldn’t say exactly when, and he certainly can’t say where. Because the liberals would get him.
In the interview, Kolfage said his nonprofit had identified eight locations to build along the border, but failed to name them, stating that his efforts could be thwarted by liberals if they were revealed.
“I wish I could name where it’s at, but we can’t name it because of the ACLU, these other liberal groups who want to sue us and impede our progress,” he said. “But it’s actually happening, the process is happening . . . the project is moving forward.”
Since the group can’t allow anyone to know where they are building, lest liberal avengers swoop down to subpoena-chop the action, that seems to mean that, even when We Build the Wall realio trulio begins to build that wall, they’ll have to do it in secret. And since Kolfage is promising supporters that they’ll see something soon, it seems possible that he will be issuing images of something. Being done somewhere. That looks … wall-like and, sure, that sounds reasonable.
We Build the Wall may have fallen $980 million short of their $1 billion goal. But $20 million is nothing to sneeze at. Especially when it’s not being wasted on something stupid. Like a wall.
