In an earlier diary, I told about my 10 year old great, great niece’s incredulity at me being able to make wood carvings. While visiting at my house, her grandfather (my nephew) had pointed out a carving and told her that I had made it. She didn’t believe it and still wouldn’t believe that I could do such things even after showing her a carving in progress. When I asked her what it would take to convince her that I could make wood carvings, she said she would be convinced if I made her a shark. At the time, I told her that if I did make her a shark, I would have it swallowing her, with only her feet sticking out. I thought that would quash her request, but she thought that was a great idea.
I didn’t intend to act on her request at all, but when I finished my carving in progress and began casting about for a new idea, the curvature of the grain in a billet split off from the raw billet of my previous carving spoke to me and said shark.
I photographed the billet before I began, then a couple of more times in progress. There’s about 7 hours total work in this carving.
Have not yet gotten niece’s reaction. I’m betting she won’t like it because it isn’t patterned after the Disney shark from Shark Tales. If so, too bad. That shark is copyrighted.
