Tech Talk for Kosacks (members of Daily Kos)
If you are an Editor of any Daily Kos group, you have the power to Republish any diary to that group. A click, a menu selection, and 2 more clicks, and you can broadcast that diary to all the Kosacks who Follow that group. Being a member of a group is a passive state, but an Editor can boost diaries to the Rec list for more attention. IMHO Republishing is the major function of an Editor. I’d guess 99% of all diaries posted on Daily Kos do not require the attention of a proofreading editor.
Edit: In the comments, pucklady pointed out: “A small correction — editors do not have the power to promote anything to the Rec list. That is done only through some secret calculation involving number of recs X time.” (Thanks, pucklady!) I do not have time to further explain my concept. Perhaps I will be able to explain my concept better next week.
Being an Editor is a major power in the Daily Kos toolbox. Some groups have restrictive views of who should become an Editor. The founders and Admins of a group can welcome many Editors if they wish; other Admins choose to be more restrictive and selective. As the French say, Chacun à son goût or Don’t eat the shark, my son.

What’s 2thanks doing lately? … He’s been so quiet!
OMG. I’ve taken a part-time job, 28 hours per week, four 7-hour days. I’m learning to canvass for For Our Future MI:
For Our Future MI works to connect issues and elections, because the two go hand in hand. We launched our field program in May 2018 and since then we’ve been knocking on doors in all corners of the state, asking voters what issues they cared about most and listening to them, because every family matters and Michiganders deserve to be lifted up and have their voices amplified.
You told us stories about immigrating to Michigan to try to work hard, play by the rules and make a better life for your families. You told us about your frustration with elected officials, who have not been doing enough to fix the roads, fund our public schools, and create shared economic prosperity for everyone. You told us about your desire for access to clean water.
We are committed to lifting up those stories and communicating with voters about the importance of getting out and voting for the progressive leaders who can make real change. [more]
Activist humor: It turned out that the guy who interviewed me for the job had been receiving the twice-monthly newsletters of my Indivisible group that I have been creating and emailing. I had not met him yet, and he had already been reading my work! … I thought it was kinda funny, anyway.
This 9-week job will benefit me in many ways. It will challenge my aging brain to step outside my zone of comfort. I’ll be getting good exercise, outdoors, in Michigan’s beautiful Autumn. (We had a wet Spring in southeast Michigan, which will likely lead to amazed eyes-ful of reds, oranges, and yellows, and this year’s monumental Spring rains brought extra foliage to the trees in this region.) And $15 per hour is not bad, considering I volunteered as a canvasser last year (for the whole panoply of victorious state-wide female candidates and also my congressional district’s Rashida Tlaib). Last year I loved canvassing for free, and this year I get paid! Not bad. The income will help me pay some of my wife’s medication bills.
All in all, a win.
If you know anyone in southeast Michigan who needs a part-time job, FOFMI still needs about 120 more canvassers! This is a major Michigan project to find people who might be leaning a little bit progressive and invite them into our fold.
I’m very pleased that my wife is feeling healthy enough for me to pop out for 8 hours in a row. I’ve not been able to spend such long hours away from home for more than 20 years.
P.S. — I know some of our precious Roundup readers and authors might be getting a little bit worried about Sunday Roundups, but fear not, I think I’ll be able to continue writing my Roundups.
How to Resist: Do Something …
The Five R’s of the Resistance
- Resist: Protest on the streets, call senators and representatives, etc.
- Rebel: Run for office, GOTV (Get Out The Vote), support a progressive.
- Revolt: Change the laws, change the culture, build your communities.
- Rely: Trust that millions of others are fighting the good fight.
- Rest: Take care of yourself, we are in this for the long term.
I can’t just will myself into feeling better, given the atrocities of our current government. But when I do something, I feel better.
… Say Something
We welcome comments in all Roundups regarding:
- National or local Good News.
- Links, stories, music, videos, quotes, tweets. (No tweets of the saffron chlamidiot, please.)
- Your resistance activity.
- Highlights from The Rachel Maddow Show.
In my Sunday smorgasbord Roundups, I especially welcome the following types of comments:
- Who won YOUR week?
- Questions about Daily Kos tech issues (no nit too small) or our map.
- Good News Roundups and you.
Thank you for fighting for truth and justice with all us Gnusies! Although 40% of our Readers don’t visit every day, that’s okay, we all do what we can. For more than 2 years, we’ve shared positive news, laughed, organized, resisted, rebelled, revolted without being revolting, relied, rested, mentored, created, crossed rivers, chewed our cud, puffed methane out both ends, and laughed. Here’s looking at you, kid, and standing upwind!
As always, please share more Good News than I can find or provide.
In case you haven’t figured it out yet, this is a group diary. We don’t stampede through your gold-plated toilet, please don’t pee in our Roundup.
Power with, not power over ❤️ ✊ ❤️
