I used to do a bit of political cartooning back when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Most of them, being tied to current events, are dated now, but some of the ones I’ve done about unions are as relevant today as they were when I drew them.
This is one. There is a school of thought which regards Labor Unions as being inherently Socialist, and therefore Un-American. It seems to me, though, that the driving principles behind Unions are based firmly in the Free Market: trying to bargain for a fair wage and fair working conditions. That seems pretty darn American to me.
Advocates of “Right-To-Work” laws claim that Big Gov’t shouldn’t get involved in labor; but they’re fine with legislation restricting worker’s ability to organize and unions’ ability to operate. Apparently Government interference in the Free Market is okay when the thumb is on the other side of the scales.
