Two days ago, there were still sixty-two active fires blazing throughout the Australian eastern coast.
And then yesterday, what everyone has been hoping and praying for had finally, finally arrived.
Torrential rain fell throughout the New South Wales region and up and down the coast and completely extinguished twenty of the active fires and put all but two below the moderate to low standings.
There are seventeen fires that have yet to be contained.
Today we were over the moon to see rain arrive across many parts of New South Wales, with decent fall in the State's north. Fingers crossed we see this rainfall remain steady and reach the firegrounds in Southern NSW over the weekend.
There are still 42 fires burning and 17 are yet to be contained. Tonight over 1,200 firefighters and support personnel are working hard to make the most of these conditions.
Sydney rejoiced at the largest rainfall that they have experienced since November of 2018.
Said Sydney Mayor Clover Moore, “It was fantastic to wake up to much-needed rain this morning! Today has already been the wettest Sydney day in 15 months, and thankfully it’s raining across NSW where we need it most.”
And the best news is, is that Sydney and areas throughout the east coast are expecting more rain this weekend.
Finally, the armageddon-like devastation that has affected our brothers and sisters, and killed over two billion creatures is finally coming to an end.
And we rejoice with them.
But we have seen what apathy and capitalism run amuck has wrought.
Our friends in Australia have felt it’s consequences.
As have the worlds low-lying countries near the coast, the arid countries made even dryer…
...yup, famine, floods and drought.
It’s here, and we must insist to our leaders that this is priority numero uno.
And as an aside, i dearly wish that whomever our nominee is, when he/she becomes president, that they offer and allow Gov. Jay Inslee to help lead the fight against climate change.
I wouldn’t want my friends in Washington State to be bereft of him as their governor...but he has the hankering to hit a global problem and the passion and vision to be of real service.
The fires have sobered us.
And we’ll see more of them, alas.
But for now, we take this time, if but only for a moment, to rejoice that this inferno that has swept Australia, is finally….finally... coming to an end.
