This is a brief diary but I need your collective help in spreading the word.
To protect themselves and the delivery workers who come behind them, stop ringing doorbells immediately! I have tweeted to FedEx, UPS, USPS, DoorDash, UberEats, GrubHub, Amazon, to zero avail. No response and no traction on my tweets.
Here in metro-Atlanta, GA I am continuing to watch, day-in-and-day-out, first hand from my home, as delivery drivers are ringing doorbells one after the other up and down my street. With each and every touch, doorbells are becoming a growing source to spread this dangerous, microscopic virus. Most drivers don’t have access to gloves and even if they do, then the doorbell germs are on their glove and they continue to spread it to their steering wheel, their tracking devices, their phone and to the packages they are handling. This is a growing hazard for all drivers.
We all rely on these dedicated workers and need to speak up to help keep them safe. I don’t know how to reach these big delivery carriers but perhaps we can all reach individual drivers as they are delivering to ask them to spread the word for their own protection and the protection of other drivers. Maybe they can sound the alarm internally up their chain of command but it should be an immediate policy change across the board, from the big mega corporations to small local restaurants who deliver their own food.
Again, for packages they should just drop and go, zero contact with anything.
For food delivery, just knock. Perhaps the drivers could have something hard to knock with as to not bruise their knuckles from knocking on multiple doors all day.
For all of us at home, please disinfect your doorbell and check for package deliveries more frequently so you aren’t waiting for the doorbell to ring. If you ordered food delivery, get yourself near the front door, watch and be ready to receive your food and please tip generously if you can.
It’s a small thing but who knows how much the virus is being transmitted via doorbells. Delivery drivers go to many houses every day. We all need to take these simple, common sense steps to stop the spread if we can.
Please share this on social media and with any delivery drivers that you know.
