This cartoon was inspired by two things. First, I noticed that over the course of the last three months, whenever I see my neighbors we're chatting while standing farther and farther apart. Eventually we may have to resort to semaphore or smoke signals for a conversation.
I completely understand the need to social distance and just find it interesting how our perceptions of space is changing.
One the flip side of this is the second inspiration for this cartoon: those who doubt how deadly this virus is to them. Living here in Vancouver WA, or “Vantucky” as it’s nicknamed, one can see proof that the second wave of the pandemic is just around the corner. People either don’t bother to wear masks when at the store, or worse, they gather and have “Covid-19 parties.” I witnessed one just this past Saturday. About a little over a dozen families had gathered in the parking lot of a local shopping mall parking lot to have what looked like a tailgate party. People were chatting. Kids were playing. All were violating any kind of safety protocol to avoid this plague. I’m sure none of them thought, “Gee, will my actions today kill Grandma and Grandpa tomorrow?”
That’s Vantucky for you.
