Grumman F8F Bearcat
Designed to meet and beat the infamous Japanese Zero and defend Navy fleets against incoming kamikaze attacks, the Grumman Bearcat was among the last piston-engine flyers built specifically for World War II combat.
Engines
Shown above is a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Engine (Double Wasp).
According to the display:
“First used to power aircraft in 1939, no other air-cooled engine of its time came close to the horsepower and displacement figures of the R-2800 Double Wasp. This engine generates one horsepower for every pound of weight making it the preferred power plant for fighters and medium bombers during WWII.”
Shown above is the Rolls-Royce RB.431 Engine (Nene).
According to the display:
“Designed and built in the five-and-a-half months with its first test run on October 27,1944, the Rolls-Royce Nene engine was the company’s third jet engine to enter production. Rolls-Royce traditionally names its jet engines after rivers. The River Nene flows through east England.”
