Welcome To Woozle Wednesday
Welcome to Woozleville, our little doggie-designated corner at the PWB Peeps [that’s Pooties (cats), Woozles (dogs), Birdeez (duh), and us Peeps of course].
Yes, it’s Woozle Wednesday, that day of the week when the PWBP Pooties take the day off and the pooches come to the rescue and politely take up the slack — well, those that are trained not to pull on their leashes. Don’t worry, pootie lovers, the kitties insist on making an appearance even though it is supposed to be their day off. They just can’t help putting in their two meows worth. Other critters like birdeez, small pets, farm animals, and sometimes wild creatures will also drop in from time to time.
The Annual Woozleville Frog Jumping Contest
On this day in 1928, the good folks of Calaveras County held the first official Jumping Frog Contest in honor of the short story by beloved humorist Mark Twain. Apparently it was a rousing success. Since then, frog jumping contests have been celebrated across the nation, although not always on May 19th.
As most regular visitors here know, the Woozlevillagers love a good celebration. One with an animal theme is always especially cherished in our community. Of course, the young pups and their kitty friends enjoy contests of all kinds. A nod to the literary world is also appreciated, especially by the more erudite senior woozles.
And today is the day. The event started with a reading of the original story by the president of the Woozleville Dramatics Club. The local Animal Rescue Society gave demonstrations on the proper care and handling of pet frogs and toads. They also gave a presentation on endangered species and educated the eager youngsters on which frogs made good companions and which were happier living in their natural habitats of trees, ponds, and glades.
Of course, a highlight of the day was the jumping contest where actual frogs competed. The competition was fierce. Excited proud pups and kittens encouraged their well-trained athletes while locals urged their favorites across the finish line. There were lots of ways to get involved. Pups dressed as frogs could play Leapfrog on a special lily pad course set up on the Village Green. Budding comics, thespians, and singers can have a go at sharing frog-inspired jokes, readings, and songs at the “Froggy Went A’courting Open Mic” sponsored by the Jeremiah Bullfrog Brew Pub.
The events are still in swing, so you are all invited to join us below the fold. But before we head over to the Village Green, we must pause and make sure that the Rulz are prominently posted, per our arrangement with the Management:
THE RULZ
You are welcome to join us! Be kind to one another, we’re all in this together.
