Each day until Christmas, I am going to write briefly about a Christmas song I enjoy. Because I can, that's why. And I an unabashed corny dork.
This song is high energy, fast paced, and I am convinced that Chuck Berry has no idea what the actual story of Rudolph actually is. The lyrics bear no resemblance to the story itself. "Out of all the reindeers you know you are the mastermind." What? Rudolph isn't in charge of anything at any point -- its Santa's idea to put him and his radioactive glowing nose in the front of the sleigh. "Run, run Rudolph, Randolph ain't too far behind." Who the hell is Randolph? Does Chuck know any of the names of the reindeer? "Santa, make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down." Rudolph flies, Chuck. He's not a UPS driver (did they have UPS in the 50s? No? Whatever. Chuck apparently wouldn't know that either.) The whole thing seems like someone told Chuck Berry he needed a Christmas song and Chuck decided he liked the name Rudolph and ran with it without knowing anything about the story at all.
Eh, screw it. It's a great song and it's Chuck Berry. Who's gonna argue with either?

Out of all the reindeers you know you are the mastermind
Run, run Rudolph, Randolph ain't too far behind
Run, run Rudolph, Santa's gotta make it to town
Santa, make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph 'cause I'm reelin' like a merry-go-round
Said Santa to a boy child, "What have you been longin' for?"
"All I want for Christmas is a rock 'n' roll 'lectric guitar"
And then away went Rudolph whizzin' like a shootin' star
Run, run Rudolph, Santa's has to make it in town
Santa, make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph, reelin' like a merry-go-round
Run, run Rudolph, Santa's gotta make it to town
Santa, make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph, I'm reelin' like a merry-go-round
Said Santa to a girl child, "What would please you most to get?"
"A little baby doll that can cry, sleep, drink and wet"
And then away went Rudolph, whizzin' like a Saber jet
Run, run Rudolph, Santa's gotta make it to town
Santa, make him hurry, tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph I'm reelin' like a merry-go-round
