Americans tend not to be very interested in international human rights, and there is a misperception among some progressives that we cannot address these problems because the US has engaged in so many of its own abuses and foreign policy disasters (much of it in recent memory by neoconservatives under the George W. Bush administration, a fact that tends to be glossed over these days). I strongly believe that we must speak about genocide wherever it is occurring and that it is possible to make distinction between governments perpetrating crimes against humanity and the citizens of those countries who have no role in the atrocities and may well be victims themselves.
