Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
April Fool’s Day is not our special day. We are not fools to focus on the positive. As I say every week, no one here is naive.
And, although the GQP wants to portray Biden as a foolish old man, Biden was the one who tRump and the Russians feared most. That’s why they worked together to blackmail Zelenskyy to manufacture a story of corruption about Hunter Biden. And Biden has shown wisdom and competence and leadership, what with the organization of sanctions and everything else.
Now, on to Servant of the People. That’s the title of the Zelenskyy comedy about becoming president of Ukraine (life imitates art). It is one of the most amusing shows that I have seen in a long time, and the perfect antidote to the news. And, I feel watching it gives us a lot of insight into the situation in Ukraine. I found it on youtube (with English subtitles) and I believe Netflix is showing it in the US (not where I am). If anyone else out there has some suggestions on how to watch it, please post in the comments.
And although we are not fools, it is good to relax with some comedy in these days that can seem so dark.
Now, gnusies, come on in, and let’s take a look at what is good and kind and true in the world.
Regular Scheduled Programming
No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

Lots of new attorneys at DOJ Jennifer Rubin Washington Post
Not Lisa Monaco
The Justice Department’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2023 includes $34 million to hire 80 attorneys for the investigation into the Jan. 6 insurrection. The department has already brought more than 750 cases, and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco made clear at a news briefing on Monday that the department is not stopping there.
“The Jan. 6 investigation is among the most wide-ranging and most complex that this department has ever undertaken," Monaco
said. “It reaches nearly every U.S. attorney’s office, nearly every FBI field office.”
Lack of money won’t slow the department down. Monaco reiterated, “Regardless of whatever resources we seek or get, let’s be very, very clear: We are going to continue to do those cases.” She added, “We are going to hold those perpetrators accountable, no matter where the facts lead us, [and] as the attorney general has said, no matter at what level. We will do those cases.”
It’s frustrating to wait, but here’s this perspective:
And there’s this:
🌻 And, Ukraine is working hard for democracy
💣 Republicans in Disarray 💣
McConnell and Rick Scott at odds Bob Brigham Raw Story
"Senator Rick Scott of Florida, the somewhat embattled head of the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm, said one utterly indisputable thing on Thursday when he stood before a packed auditorium of supporters at the conservative Heritage Foundation: His plan for a G.O.P. majority would make everyone angry at him, Republicans included," Jonathan Weisman reported for The New York Times. "His leader, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, has repeatedly told Mr. Scott to pipe down about his '11-Point Plan to Rescue America,' with its call to impose income taxes on more than half of Americans who pay none now, and to sunset all legislation after five years, presumably including Social Security and Medicare." ✂️
McConnell declared Scott's plan "will not be part of the Republican Senate Majority agenda.
"For Democrats, Mr. Scott is a gift. The 2022 campaign is shaping up as a conventional midterm, focused on the economy under Democratic control," Weisman explained. "Democrats are gleefully calling attention to it, even going so far as to promote the Republican senator’s speaking engagement on Thursday."
Orgies?!? Finally, something that may get the Rs to rebuke their own Paul Waldman and Greg Sargent Washington Post
It takes a lot to get Republican members of Congress angry at one of their own. But Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) managed to do it, not just by being a uniquely repugnant figure, but also by claiming to reveal the dark underbelly of official Washington in a way that Republicans apparently found offensive.
What’s important is the particular tale Cawthorn offered. It shows how far-right systems of thought can boomerang on those who try to benefit from the political energies unleashed by them — while still maintaining distance from their sources to avoid getting too tainted.
Cawthorn told a podcast host that the “sexual perversion” in Washington is so rampant that even Republicans are involved. His fellow Republicans are aghast, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has vowed to discipline him
Apparently Senator Tillis, an R, prefers another GOP candidate to Cawthorn.
Meanwhile, DeSantis is taking on Disney.

🎺 Time to start reminding people what it was like 2 years ago
Tweet 3: None of that happened by accident. We were able to do it because we coordinated across government and partnered with state and local leaders and the private sector to leverage every resource we had against this virus. We left no stone unturned.
Also, the government is both working on the high gas prices (which do hurt many) AND is finally framing it right “Putin’s price hike at the pump”.
OK, a few Rs voted for this, but mostly Ds. Gosh, this seems like something easy to run against in the fall, as some have noticed:
However, this may be difficult to squeeze through the Senate.
Infrastructure in Michigan! Autumn Pritchure WLNS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WLNS) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer will sign the historic $4.8 billion Building Michigan Together legislation into law today.
No lead, please!
The bipartisan Building Michigan Together legislation includes infrastructure investments that contribute to the continuation of repairing roads and bridges, replacing lead pipes, protecting drinking water, expanding high-speed internet, building local and state parks, and creating affordable housing.
The governor will be joined by Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, State Senator Winnie Brinks, Ron Olson, Chief of Parks and Recreation DNR and Brian Harris, Board Member for Downtown Grand Rapids Inc.
Governor Sisolak appoints first public health officer Nevada Appeal
Gov. Steve Sisolak on Monday named Allison Genco to be Nevada’s first public health resource officer.
The position was created during the 2021 Legislature to analyze the state’s existing public health infrastructure and make recommendations to take care of unmet needs and opportunities for federal and private funding. She will also work to improve coordination between providers of public health services.
Genco was most recently with the governor’s health resource team working to support Nevada’s COVID-19 response. Prior to that, she was a reproductive health coordinator for the state.
Love the fact that her background is reproductive health!

Democracy is good for your health Erica Pandey Jim VandeHei Axios
Living in a stable democracy leads to a longer and more fulfilling life, the data shows:
- Health: If you live in a democracy that’s at least 25 years old, you're likely to live 14 years longer than people in autocracies, a University of British Columbia study found. Babies in mature democracies are 78% less likely to die in childbirth.
- Wealth: Democratization boosts a nation's wealth 20% over 25 years.
- Education: Democratization bumps citizens' enrollment in secondary education by 70%.
However, we CANNOT take democracy for granted. Autocracies have made great strides in the last ten years (the article is not entirely optimistic).

📥 Actions You Can Take 📤
Voting rights. This may be the biggest issue threatening our democracy right now. Besides contacting your representatives at the state and federal level to do the right thing (depending on who they are), you can support and contact these organizations:
ACLU — American Civil Liberties Union
Democracy Docket — founded by Marc Elias, so important in fighting the challenges after the last election.
Fair Fight — founded by Stacey Abrams
🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.
🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.
👎 Defund the seditionists. This is a list with companies that sometimes have donated to the seditionists, and their current approach to supporting or not supporting the seditionists. The list is long. You will recognize many of the corporations, and you probably have a relationship with some — either you are a customer, a shareholder, or maybe even an employee. Contact them and compliment or complain, but let them know you are watching. Forward it to others.

tRump’s Truth Social app is not doing well Antoinette Siu Yahoo News
Former president Donald Trump’s Truth Social app is seeing a 93% drop in signups and similarly steep decline in traffic after a rocky rollout last month fraught with technical issues and an extensive waiting list for new signups to actually use the service.
After going live on President’s Day, the Twitter-lookalike app saw installs decline by more than 800,000 since its launch week, according to Sensor Tower. Installs on the Apple app store this month have fallen to about 60,000 per week, based on early estimates.
“This is down 93% from its launch week, when it saw 872,000 installs during the week of Feb. 21,” Stephanie Chan, mobile insights strategist at Sensor Tower, told TheWrap. “We estimate that Truth Social has so far reached approximately 1.2 million installs since its launch.”
And there is no data about how many actually use the site, which is not yet available to Android customers.

And some commentary:
Wisconsin Rs in trouble for hiding fraudit documents Bob Brigham Raw Story
"A judge found Assembly Speaker Robin Vos in contempt of court Wednesday for failing to release documents related to a Republican-run review of the 2020 election," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday. "Dane County Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn determined the Rochester Republican and the Assembly as a whole adopted 'a collective and abject disregard for the court’s order' from four months ago to turn over documents sought by the liberal group American Oversight under the state's open records law. She ordered Vos and the Assembly to turn over records within 14 days and to each pay $1,000 per day if they fail to do that."
In Arizona, the Cyber Ninjas are being fined $50,000 a day.
📣 Let’s Honor Truth ☀️️
Let’s celebrate whistleblowers! I have often featured particular whistleblowers here, those who have made big headlines during the week. But I recently discovered a website (whistlerblowersblog.org) dedicated to them, and there’s a lot going on that doesn’t garner our attention.
Whistleblower receives $1.25 million from SEC
On March 25, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced a whistleblower award of $1.25 million. The whistleblower voluntarily provided the SEC with original information that caused the agency to open an investigation into the
Whistling cat. Note ID of whistleblower is protected
alleged misconduct. The whistleblower did not receive the statutory maximum award amount, however, because of an unreasonable delay in reporting the misconduct to the SEC.
According to the award order, in addition to providing “specific and credible information,” the whistleblower “provided continuing, extensive assistance, including helping Commission staff identify witnesses, understand critical documents and terminology, and focus the investigation on key issues, saving Commission time and resources.” ✂️
Under the Dodd-Frank Act, the SEC protects the confidentiality of whistleblowers and thus does not disclose any identifying information about award recipients.
Since issuing its first award in 2012, the SEC has awarded approximately $1.2 billion to 256 individuals. In fiscal year 2021, the agency shattered records by awarding approximately $564 million to 108 individuals.
Advocates discuss key roles of whistleblowers in fighting environmental crimes Grace Schepsis Whistleblowersblog
The nature of these crimes, Kohn notes, makes their impact much more catastrophic than something strictly financial.
Please save my forest
“If it’s a bank fraud, then they will just collect the money later on,” Kohn said. “But if you destroy a forest, it may take a little time to fix that. If ever.”
Kohn outlined the ideal environmental whistleblower, pointing out both their unique position and dangerous circumstances.
“You need the insider,” Kohn said. “You need the person with the good evidence that can actually trigger a successful prosecution. And that always tends to be an insider. The insider has the most to lose, not just their job, obviously, or their career, but they might be in physical danger. Because they’re closely associated with those who are engaged in the illegal activity. They have to learn that the best whistleblower practice is quite simple: anonymity and confidentiality.”

Fiji and food security during covid Reasons to Be Cheerful
The pandemic has changed the way we live — in some cases, by reverting it back to how it once was. Hakai reports on how some Pacific Islands, faced with market closures, have re-embraced traditional systems in which food is grown locally and used for sustenance rather than sale. These shifts have had an unexpected effect: hunger has fallen as communities have gone back to growing and sharing their own food, making sure there is plenty to go around.
The green economy is a green economy Andy Corbley Good News Network
A new report shows that the percentage of jobs in the U.S. that fall under the category “green” has increased over the last 50 years to 9 million, or 6% of the total workforce.
This number is not only set to exponentially rise to 24 million, or 14% of total workforce over the next 10 years, but is already underestimated in most private and public employment data.
The report was prepared by Working Nation, a non-profit aimed at educating people about job trends to help influence positive outcomes for the workers of the future.
☕️ Have some coffee! American College of Cardiology Science Daily
Drinking coffee -- particularly two to three cups a day -- is not only associated with a lower risk of heart disease and dangerous heart rhythms but also with living longer, according to studies being presented at the American College of Cardiology's 71st Annual Scientific Session. These trends held true for both people with and without cardiovascular disease. Researchers said the analyses -- the largest to look at coffee's potential role in heart disease and death -- provide reassurance that coffee isn't tied to new or worsening heart disease and may actually be heart protective.
"Because coffee can quicken heart rate, some people worry that drinking it could trigger or worsen certain heart issues. This is where general medical advice to stop drinking coffee may come from. But our data suggest that daily coffee intake shouldn't be discouraged, but rather included as a part of a healthy diet for people with and without heart disease," said Peter M. Kistler, MD, professor and head of arrhythmia research at the Alfred Hospital and Baker Heart Institute in Melbourne, Australia, and the study's senior author. "We found coffee drinking had either a neutral effect -- meaning that it did no harm -- or was associated with benefits to heart health."
Animals in Ecuador get some rights Paige Bennett EcoWatch
The highest court in Ecuador has ruled in favor of wild animals. A case for Estrellita, a woolly monkey taken from the wild and kept as a pet, is the first case to apply the country’s “rights of nature” law to animals. ✂️
An oncilla, lives in Ecuador, smaller than an ocelot
“What makes this decision so important is that now the rights of nature can be used to benefit small groups or individual animals,” Kristen Stilt, a Harvard law professor, said, as reported by Inside Climate News. “That makes rights of nature a far more powerful tool than perhaps we have seen before.”
Ecuador was the first country to incorporate rights of nature in its constitution, and this case was the first to apply the law to wild animals. The 7-2 verdict helped further define the scope of the country’s rights of nature law and ensures animals are included.
