I know there’s a lot going on in America right now, but I’m kind of surprised no one has yet to post that the great Barbara Ehrenreich has passed away.
Her book Nickel and Dimed, in which she worked a number of minimum wage jobs to report what the working poor face each and every day, touched me tremendously and was a stark reminder that the class war is hell on those actually fighting it.
In the book, Ehrenreich wrote: “To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor, to everyone.” Truer words….
Godspeed, Ms. Ehrenreich, and condolences to her family. I myself plan to do plenty of loving and fighting like hell in her memory.

Thanks to everyone who recommended, took the time to write a comment, and suggested other works by Ms. Ehrenreich that I will most certainly check out on our next library trip.
My apologies for not following Daily Kos etiquette and responding more quickly to the comments. I work in grocery retail and though I was supposed to be off today I had a hunch (we’re still short-handed) we might have a person or two call in sick because it’s a holiday weekend so I hopped into bed right after posting this. Sure enough, the phone rang before the sun had even come up and two people in my department had called in or not shown up for their shift. Needless to say the overtime will come in handy for my family.
Thanks again to all.
