Every day.
Every. Single. Day.
My phone has a dozen messages on it. My inbox has even more.
“We need your contributions! Don’t desert us! Doesn’t [fill in name] still care? Is there anything we can do to get you to make a donation?”
Look, don’t get me wrong. I am quite generous with my contributions to Democratic candidates, state parties, and various PACs. I don’t say this to brag, it’s just a fact. But this constant hammering of me is getting old. I WAS STILL GETTING PLEAS FOR DONATIONS ON ELECTION DAY LAST NOVEMBER, FOR G-D’S SAKE.
John, Mark—you’re great Senators and I was proud to support you. I have your back 100%. BUT YOU’RE NOT UP AGAIN FOR SIX FREAKING YEARS. STOP HITTING ME UP FOR MONEY.
My fear is that this constant nagging for money is going to alienate people. I’m a hard-core Democrat. I bleed Blue. I’m a Democratic firebreather. I think the Republican Party and the broader conservative “movement” are cancers on this country. But I feel like I’m being taken advantage of. When the reward for giving to one person is ALWAYS having a dozen more ask you for money, it starts to make you reluctant to give. And I’m particularly sick and tired of this “We’re doomed!” garbage, a tactic that uses fear and guilt to wring money out of donors. I can easily see how a person less devoted than I could be put off by all this.
I’ll keep giving money to people and causes I believe need support. But I will not tolerate constantly being bombarded on all sides for $$. I will decide when to donate, to whom to donate, and how much to donate. And I will simply deep-six any group that says, “It’s hopeless!” in their pleas. Got it?
Enough already.
