WineRev’s Good and Goofy Notes
Watch for WineRev’s G&G notes in the comments to see what others went through, struggled with, and surmounted in the past. His G&G comments are mini Good News Roundups. You can find all his comments here, even today’s, once he posts it. Tech Tip: You can search for >>> in Roundups to quickly find his comments.
WineRev, last Sunday, October 8, 2023:
Youngish Gnusies began their jaunt through the Gnuville Breakfast Brunch and Flavor Tasting Room last week. Yes, we welcomed the young-uns!
Salmiak salt? We are going to open the Sunday Good News RoundUp with the introduction of a scientifically substantiated TASTE? Granted, the arriving Gnusies at the Gnuville Breakfast Brunch and Flavor Tasting Room HAVE taste…..in many senses of that word. And we all know the Top Four that we learned in elementary school: sweet, sour, salty and bitter. The denizens of coffee, tea, cocoa and/or mimosas who are crossword puzzle fans have used the recent #5 “Umami” to fill in 62-Down in the Sunday Giant Edition many a time. Ok, fine.
But Salmiak? (“Seven letters, ending in “k””) This is great. I’ll use it to sprinkle into threads and on-line conversations at Real Conspiracies dot com. I can add a dash on the Unseen Aliens Among Us thread of a Salmiak marker EITHER for detecting fellow, visiting aliens (since humans are…...different) OR, on the Dan Brown Bloodline of Jesus & Mary Magadelene Same Always Plot Line channel as a key difference between the Truly Enlightened and ordinary peasants. (Endless is the variety of ways humans use to divide themselves between US and THEM……..with those doing the dividing ALWAYS (yes, a human Absolute) noting the (superior) US ALWAYS includes the one(s) making the IN vs. OUT list. (To my knowledge no one in human history has ever made up a list of US and THEM, IN and OUT, Superior and Inferior, and voluntarily said, “Yes, I am inferior and a slave. I deserve to be exploited by my betters in every way shape and form, for I am not their equal in any way or measure.”)
Hmmm…..another basic human taste? Back in my Wine Shop management days (where tasting is terrifically important for sales) we also applied sweet, sour, salty and bitter under various pretentious disguises (“This chardonnay has the charming of a disturbed bee meeting your sniffing nose in the garden, a pleasant opening of cherry marmalade segueing into a buttery oak-i-ness, and finishes with a chickpea flair accenting freshly-made tire tracks from a spinout.”) Umami did not figure in. But we often claimed (both staff and customers) that “smoke” might well be its own taste/flavor, and I thought I saw some research being done on the question. Hmmmmmm…..
Well, while you ponder over the tasteful particulars of tastes, 2thanks has assembled all manner of flavored Good News for your Sunday, cooked in links, buttered with comments, paired with pictures, boiled with fresh thoughts or fricasseed with digression and extensions. Thanks for launching us, 2thanks, and welcome to the History Corner!
Science
Please share good science news with us! (Especially JSWT, health, environment.)
A good place to look for science news if you are waiting for the Sunday Roundup is the archive of Overnight News Digest. On Saturdays, the OND always focuses on science, though not all of it is devoted to what I would call Good Science News.
Need more good news?
… arhpdx posted a list of good news sites toward the top of a recent Roundup, or you can find that same list in my comment: Good News Sources. Thank you, arhpdx and Mokurai!

You can use the map’s zoom arrows to resize the view and focus on your pin to find neighbors. Please note that the Google Map, though convenient to operate, is visually inaccurate because, among other issues, it enlarges North America and shrinks Africa [Maps present a distorted view of the world by kos].

Tech Talk for Kosacks
- Load-More Workaround: On a desktop or laptop, to banish the Daily Kos Load More buttons, click this link, which opens the main Daily Kos page and shuts off the Load More buttons at the same time. You must Reload any open Daily Kos pages. After that, you’re good to go, but you may need to come back here and click that link again in a few weeks. According to the DK Help Desk, the “Load More” option also resets the user back to the display of the old-style, React comments.
- Got a Daily Kos tech question? Let us know. No question is too basic.
- Solved a tech question recently? Please feel free to brag in the comments.

Our Roundup is almost open!
Thank you for fighting for truth and justice with all us Gnusies! 40% of our Readers don’t visit every day, 50% of us do, and 10% are here for the first time! We all do what we can. For 5 years, we’ve shared positive news, laughed, organized, resisted, rebelled, revolted without being revolting, relied, rested, mentored, created, crossed rivers, chewed our cud, puffed methane out both ends, and laughed. Here’s looking at you, kid, and standing upwind!
As always, please share more Good News than I can find or provide.
This is a group diary, and by my power I declare this Good Gnus Salo(o)n open! Let the good-news sharing and community building begin!
Power with, not power over ❤️ ✊ ❤️
