Confession: I have never been to a karaoke bar, nor otherwise sang in public, and I imagine the same is true for many of you. However, I will wager TEN WHOLE DOLLARS that all of us will occasionally sing in the shower, or with music in the car, or via whatever device you favor for playing music. (Hi-fi? 8-track?) So even if you’ve never picked a song out of a karaoke catalog, there’s probably a song or two or twelve that you can’t help but sing along with.
I’ve often said I'm not a Grateful Dead fan, but they have so many good songs, and the album “American Beauty” is an absolute classic, so maybe I am a fan? I don’t know; labels seem less important the older I get. Anyway, the first clip is my favorite Dead tune, “Ripple”, chosen because I actually do a pretty good Jerry Garcia imitation, and because I’m going to have this played at my funeral someday. Plus, everybody can sing along at the end (foreshadowing for second clip).
This second clip is from a Green Day concert in Emirates Stadium in the UK, where the PA system is playing music before the concert starts. When “Bohemian Rhapsody" comes on, the crowd sings along, and dances, and waves their arms, and the community and the shared experience that is created is simply magical. (I'm not crying, you're crying!) Freddy Mercury is somewhere smiling at this, no doubt….
What are your favorite sing-alongs—be it solo or in a group? By yourself or where others can hear?
(BTW, if you choose to indulge in an “adult beverage” while you’re posting tonight, in order to better replicate the karaoke experience, who am I to judge? Excuse me while I open another Anchor Steam….)
Gentle reminder: Please continue to put the name of your selection in your comment along with your song. Those of us on our phones? We really appreciate it.
So, put your quarter in the slot and your song in the comments.
You know how this works — This is your Saturday night jukebox and the party starts... NOW~!
