WineRev’s Good and Goofy Notes
Watch for WineRev’s G&G notes in the comments to see what others went through, struggled with, and surmounted in the past. His G&G comments are mini Good News Roundups. You can find all his comments here, even today’s, once he posts it. Tech Tip: You can search for >>> in Roundups to quickly find his comment.
WineRev, last Sunday, October 15, 2023, in the Weekend Dance Studio and Gnuville Breakfast Brunch and Good News Uptake Salon:
Good Sunday morning to all the Dancing Gnus of the 2thanks Weekend Dance Studio. You can see in the opening snapshot that Gnu #2 is attempting to lead her partner with her left-hind hoof, a typical rookie mistake, but we all have to get past those “awkward Teenage blues” while “working on our night moves”. Keep at it, kids!
The Gnuville Breakfast Brunch and FedEx Delivery Front Porch branch office here at SageHagRN’s abode saw the delivery of a fresh dining hall rug and an “easy to assemble” piece of furniture yesterday. The rolled up rug is still relaxing from being unleashed from its Saran wrap cocoon and will work nicely under the dining room table. The lounger only has 5 line drawings of pages for assembly, done in perfect IKEA-nian, complete with little Allen wrench. Naturally, the first Critical Bolt with Washer twisted in perfectly on the first try. (This is the segment used on HGTV, where smiling faced demolition on a project site is followed by smiling faced laser-blasters brought in to level the ground. The smiling faced drywall hangers, plumbers, carpenters and electricians all smile their way through the next 3 rounds of commercials until at the end of the episode the smiling, aghast and agape homeowners traipse through the re-model, saying “Oh My God” a minimum of 11 times (so the best 4 takes are used on camera in the editing room; its in the release and contract for them to appear on the show) and everyone marvels over and thanks the “design team” for coming up with a fresh combination of shiplap done in black, white or 50 shades of gray.)
The Second Critical Bolt simply would NOT engage its screw threads with the embedded sleeve with inside, mirror image screw threads on the other side. Well, actually, it did…….after nearly an hour of increasing frustration and fury (complete with Non-Family Friendly monologues). But it’s in place, cat sniffed and approved and was road tested by a very tired SageHagRN last evening.
This entire adventure reinforces the admiration I have for the staff of the Gnuville Breakfast Brunch and Good News Uptake Salon. They make it look so EASY: hot coffee, piping hot tea, smooth mocha-cocoa, spot-on mimosas (in 7 fruit flavors; 1 for each day of the week). And they and the Good News Host like today’s 2thanks make it look (and for us, feel) effortless as Good News items, links, stories, videos and chats grace the Cozy Lounge----making it so easy and refreshing for the rest of us to comment, expand, snark, crack wise, digress, and clarify. (And, except for a little section over there leading to the Boat Basin, no shiplap in sight.
Thank you for the Round Up and the Respite, 2thanks and one and all! [More]
Science
Cost of Solar Power and Battery Storage — Here’s What It Means for the Future:
A new study by the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) indicates that affordable and eco-friendly energy options have gotten much cheaper to install in the last 10 years — so much so that they might just be all we need by 2050, Interesting Engineering reports.
It’s an optimistic prediction but not unfounded. The Berlin-based climate research institute just released its study results, which showed that thanks to a growing industry and improving technology, there’s been an 87% drop in the cost of solar panels and an 85% drop in the price of battery storage.
Please share good science news with us! (Especially JSWT, health, environment.)
A good place to look for science news if you are waiting for the Sunday Roundup is the archive of Overnight News Digest. On Saturdays, the OND always focuses on science, though not all of it is devoted to what I would call Good Science News.

You can use the map’s zoom arrows to resize the view and focus on your pin to find neighbors. Please note that the Google Map, though convenient to operate, is visually inaccurate because, among other issues, it enlarges North America and shrinks Africa [Maps present a distorted view of the world by kos].

Tech Talk for Kosacks
- Load-More Workaround: On a desktop or laptop, to banish the Daily Kos Load More buttons, click this link, which opens the main Daily Kos page and shuts off the Load More buttons at the same time. You must Reload any open Daily Kos pages. After that, you’re good to go, but you may need to come back here and click that link again in a few weeks. According to the DK Help Desk, the “Load More” option also resets the user back to the display of the old-style, React comments.
- Got a Daily Kos tech question? Let us know. No question is too basic.
- Solved a tech question recently? Please feel free to brag in the comments.

Our Roundup is almost open!
Thank you for fighting for truth and justice with all us Gnusies! 40% of our Readers don’t visit every day, 50% of us do, and 10% are here for the first time! We all do what we can. For 5 years, we’ve shared positive news, laughed, organized, resisted, rebelled, revolted without being revolting, relied, rested, mentored, created, crossed rivers, chewed our cud, puffed methane out both ends, and laughed. Here’s looking at you, kid, and standing upwind!
As always, please share more Good News than I can find or provide.
This is a group diary, and by my power I declare this Good Gnus Salo(o)n open! Let the good-news sharing and community building begin!
Power with, not power over ❤️ ✊ ❤️
2thanks (he, him)
