Earth Crisis: Truth Cannot be Denied Forever
The primary cause of global warming along with the automobile.
The planet so far has lacked the ability to take the necessary steps to save civilization from both environmental and climatic destruction. Blocked by the major creators of the crisis, the fossil fuel industries, which have a stranglehold on governments world wide. They have done their worst in the last hundred years to stall any significant action against it. They have succeeded.
I’ll keep this article as short as I can and to the point. We in America are the worst offender and have contributed the most to the problem of greenhouse gases. If climate instability is not halted, millions or even billions may die and economies will surely crash. Civilization as we know it will decline and one day could vanish.
There Must be Some Kind of Way Out of This . . .
Boiling Summers along with frequent flooding will lead to mass starvation.
Boiling summers combined with more massive flooding events will increasingly destroy crops and lead to famine, starvation and water shortages. Unable to expand and increase profits under these conditions, growth oriented capitalist economies will falter, with the great depression of the 1930s appearing like a walk in the park.
Exaggeration, you say? Doom and gloom paranoia? I wish it were so.
This will one day, perhaps as soon as 2024, erupt in America and before the people of the world, as the number one issue. It should have years ago. But with so much industry and economies depending on fossil fuels, that eruption into mass consciousness has been prevented.
Your truly in 1951.
In my own case I was looking back today at a photo of me riding a carousel pony in the summer of 1951 that my mother put me on, with my entire life ahead of me.
Hopeful, innocent and oblivious to what the future may bring. In that moment of reflection I became angry, angry at myself for not acting more decisively years ago and understanding the danger. And angry with world leaders lacking the courage to speak out and act.
I’m asking you, the reader, what are we freaking going to do about this? Are we going to give up? Are those of us aware of what’s coming just going to say it’s impossible to do anything and accept our fate? With us and our children drowning, boiling, or starving?
Well, enough ranting. Here’s the open letter.
An Open Letter to Joe Biden
Dear Mr. President,
President Biden
You have so far held the monstrous beast of Republican totalitarianism at bay. You’ve surprised many of your critics, me being one of them. Achieved successes in a bitterly divided country, efficiently addressed Cov19 and survived efforts of a Republican friendly corporate media to undermine your efforts.
No one knows the future outcome of the battle to preserve a rational and Democratic government or the results of the coming 2024 elections.
An Unwanted Trifecta
As if all this were not enough to fill your every minute of every day, we are faced with an even greater threat, one of the industrialized countries, and America’s, own making. Global warming caused by industrialization via fossil fuels has reached a tipping point, and has begun boiling and drowning humanity with increased ferocity and environmental toxicity and destruction.
I’m close to the same age as you, and have also witnessed the dramatic climatic changes in the last 75 years first hand. Unprecedented flooding this year has struck our West Coast, dramatic and persistent flooding in parts of the East Coast. Heat domes this summer are present all across the globe as well as across half of America, with persistent and life threatening record high temperatures. Oh, and Putin is still running amuck in Ukraine, rounding out the trifecta.
It’s time to publicly acknowledge the seriousness of the crisis. I’d hazard a guess that you’ve already been advised on the matter’s deadly potential. When this crisis finally busts open and the public at large realize every life on the planet is at stake, including their own, you can be certain it will be dumped into your lap by both the media and the hypocritical Republicans. While the fossil fuel interests run for cover and call on their own “experts.”
Use What Caused the Crisis to Alleviate it
FDR
During WWII we were able to commit the tremendous industrial resources necessary to defeat international fascism. Those industrial and scientific resources can be turned around and used to address and weaken global warming. As they actually stimulated the economy during WWII ending the great depression, they can do the same today, only saving lives rather than losing them and destroying the planet.
It was possible then because the attack on Pearl Harbor helped galvanize almost universal support for the war effort. Currently, our government lacks the unity to take a similar approach and the much needed larger commitment to combat global warming.
Admittedly, there is no such national consensus today, either on saving democracy and the Republic or fighting global warming. That consensus must somehow be built. You’ve shown your ability to accomplish what was thought to be impossible. Industry and development must be refocused before they cover the earth in concrete and destroy what’s left of the natural world.
This time the enemy within must be addressed as well as an out-of-control climate crisis. Both are knocking at death’s door. Global warming is a man-made disaster on a par or greater than WWII, one that needs to be fully exposed, but with a confidence that we can overcome it. The deniers must be called out and shamed.
Addressing the Crisis Will Require Much Preparation
Preparing the country must begin now. I don’t envy what seems like an impossible task that awaits you. But waiting only will make that task more impossible. Industry must be turned around and expanded not to build more weapons of war and condominiums, but to devise a strategy, scientific as well as economic, that can lesson what nature is dishing out.
Think of Earth as a spaceship alone in a vast Universe. We have no place to go if we destroy it.
Denial of global warming by the Republicans is indefensible if brought to the nation’s attention in a planned and coordinated way. You have the team, staff and sufficient party support to do that. You will never be ready to deal with this crisis, one that as of today is already here, unless you prepare for it.
Never mind the fossil fuel interests and their lobbyists, they are like the cigarettes companies that denied the dangers of their product. They stand behind the global warming deniers. They cannot prevail as the worldwide weather-related disasters are becoming plain for all to see.
Either address the crisis, or the crisis will overtake those that remained silent.
Yes, There’s Hope
One final point: the worst of climate change has occurred in the last few years. We may not have to struggle for hundreds of years and return completely to preindustrial levels of greenhouse gases to get the matter under some measure of control over it.
Let it not be our fate that we destroy ourselves. And prevent something that very well may happen thousand of years from now. When a wiser and more advanced civilization inhabits the Earth and studies our long barbaric (in their eyes) period of history. And remains forever puzzled as to why we did not save ourselves.
You have access to the world’s best research and climate scientists. You also have the immense responsibility to act upon this information. Whether one believes in a Supreme Being or that the Universe itself is our Creator, the planet is ours to save or destroy.
I humbly ask that you choose life.
Thank you for listening.
Sincerely
Michael Castellano
