The former guy had more turnover in his cabinet than any recent president — and it’s not even close.
Remember those days? We all had bingo cards guessing who would be the next to go. It was a constant shuffle due to the narcissism, incompetence, and questionable behavior of the former guy.
How about Biden? Well . . .
WaPo: Trump’s Cabinet was in flux. Biden’s has barely changed.
About three-quarters of Trump’s initial Cabinet picks were gone by the end of his four years in office, while only a handful have left Biden’s almost 3½ years in.
The contrast is stark. More of the core Cabinet department heads had left by Trump’s third year in office than in any recent president’s entire four-year term, according to Brookings Institution data.
And turnover is bad!
Turnover creates enormous amounts of disruption, said Max Stier, CEO of the Partnership for Public Service.
“It’s not just a single person turning over, but a large number of other people as dominoes fall from the boss leaving,” Stier said. “That means that the people inside the organization don’t have clarity around what the priorities are to achieve because leadership is setting the strategic direction.”
[In addition,] Stier said a “merry-go-round” of leadership can hamper government response in a crisis.
As of late April,
Looking at the entire Cabinet, only five officials have left Biden’s so far, whereas more than 20 departed Trump’s, not including at least 17 other acting officials who stepped in temporarily.
Trump’s penchant for “acting” cabinet officers created similar problems. Stier put it this way:
“My metaphor on the acting side is to think about acting officials as the substitute teacher. Do you really want to send your child to a school that is made up of substitute teachers?”
Why has Biden done so well? Well, part of it that Biden’s Cabinet Members Seem To Really Like Their Jobs, according to FiveThirtyEight’s analysis. They’re treated with respect by their boss, they agree with the missions of their offices, and they don’t think government is evil!
Are these people we want to stick around? Yes, because Biden made a point of choosing competent people for his Cabinet. And because he fulfilled A Promise: A Cabinet That ‘Looks Like America.’
There are more women and people of color in President Biden’s proposed cabinet than in the last four administrations, modernizing what has long been a stubbornly white, male institution.
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden has done so much more than many people guessed could be done. He deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
