UPDATED FOR CLARIFICATION.
So, there was a special election for Ohio’s 6th U.S. House district this evening.
The district is ranked as being either R+16 (according to Cook Political Report), R+20 (according to Dave’s Redistricting) or R+29 according to Lakshya Jain of Split Ticket.
The Republican is a reasonably well-respected state Senator who spent $700,000.
The Democrat, Michael Kripchak, is apparently a waiter who quit his job to run & only spent $25,000 total.
The Republican did end up winning by 9 points, HOWEVER…
Sure enough…
Well, guess what?
As I say on my Special Election fundraising page:
Unlike my usual policy of only listing competitive legislative districts, for special elections I include even seemingly "solid" red or blue districts, since these types of races sometimes throw curveballs to conventional wisdom.
Yeah, you could say that.
In any event...
Since there’s some confusion in the comments:
-
This wasn’t a primary election, it was a special election to fill a House vacancy.
-
No, the Democratic candidate didn’t win, but he only lost by 9 points in a district which he “should” have lost by 16 — 29 points, depending on whose methodology you go by. Thus, he overperformed by 7 — 20 points.
