I was listening to a great interview with Joe Biden on Smartless and he talked about how everywhere he goes, when world leaders from other democracies get him alone, they talk about the urgency of him beating Trump once again. As reported in print:
Whether it’s the G20 meeting in India or whatever the meeting where there are other heads of state . . . almost every one of the world leaders finds an excuse to get me alone for a moment, put their hand on my arm, and say, “You can’t let him win. My” — meaning his country or her country — “my democracy is at stake. My democracy is at stake.”
World leaders’ support for Biden is not only because Trump is a danger to worldwide democracy, but also because they respect Biden. For example, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently expressed strong confidence in Biden’s abilities and achievements:
I think that Joe Biden is someone who is very clear, who knows exactly what he is doing and who is one of the most experienced politicians in the world, especially when it comes to international politics . . . . In a difficult situation like this, where a war is taking place right here in Europe, after Russia invaded Ukraine, where many, many other conflicts are raging around the world, this is an asset, a good thing.
Scholz added that Biden’s successes in US domestic policy are part of the equation:
He has pursued a policy that has led to proper economic development in the country, that has helped to ensure that peace and security are in good hands and that the U.S. is actually playing its role in the world. And, of course, he is committed to togetherness and cohesion in his country.
Biden has long foreign policy chops
One of the reasons Barack Obama picked Biden as his VP in the first place is because of Joe’s long history of understanding foreign relations and working with foreign leaders. Obama was blown away by the nuanced and intelligent answers Joe gave during the debates in 2008. No surprise there: Joe chaired the very powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee and had spent years traveling the world and meeting with leaders. When Biden was VP, Obama sent him on many missions around the world to deal with foreign leaders and help make important policy decisions.
Over his many years of public service Biden got a well-deserved reputation as someone who will call out bad actors and who values the alliances and friendships that keep America (and the world safe).
In fact, our allies abroad were among the many to encourage Biden to run for the presidency.
From March 2019:
When Joe Biden attended the annual Munich Security Conference last month, the wonky foreign policy confab promised an escape from the nonstop speculation back home about the former vice president’s political plans.
Instead, Biden’s 2020 intentions were the talk of the conference.
When Armenian President Armen Sarkissian ran into him in a hallway, a TV camera captured him asking Biden: “Are you going to run?” (Biden whispered an inaudible answer.)
And in several conversations with European leaders in Munich, Biden heard a repeated refrain, according to a conference attendee familiar with the conversations: The world needs you.
“The world needs you”
Citing Biden’s long foreign policy track record and longtime commitment to the trans-Atlantic alliance, some of the leaders — echoing views from across the continent — told Biden that his return to the White House would be a sure way to restore western alliances that President Donald Trump has dramatically fractured.
Our allies around the world were hungry for a Biden presidency and the return of a world in which the United States stands with other democracies against the threat of authoritarianism. They have been grateful to see the US reclaim its leadership.
Joe Biden is respected (and trusted) by leaders all over the world.
Joe Biden is a great president.
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden has done so much more than many people guessed could be done. He deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
