I am the Democratic Candidate running for the Florida House of Representatives District 55, in Pasco County. I am running because I believe in democracy.
For democracy to function, every candidate should face an opponent to give voters real options. Even though I live in a different district than District 55 of Pasco County, I am running to be sure that Pasco County voters can have a choice between candidates who hold different views of how our government should serve its citizens. That is how democracy is supposed to work.
I am a retired attorney, having practiced in St. Louis, Missouri. My legal career has been devoted to providing access to our court system for low- and moderate-income working families, first working at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, a legal aid organization.
I finished my career as the Managing Attorney at the UAW Legal Services Plan in St. Louis, providing legal services to UAW members and their families. I believe that our legal system must provide access to the court system for everyone, regardless of their economic status.
I moved to Florida when I retired, and immediately became active in Democratic organizations. I am a member of our county Democratic party. I am President of the Collier County Chapter of the Democratic Environmental Caucus of Florida, (CCDECF), and serve as Vice-President of the DECF, which is the state caucus organization.
I believe:
All citizens should have access to
- free, appropriate, public education
- affordable health care
- affordable housing
- employment opportunities.
All women should have the right to reproductive health care, including abortion.
We must meet the challenges we face from increasingly devastating storms and extreme heat brought on by climate change.
The Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution provides for the separation of church and state, is an essential principle of a democratic government. No religion should be established as the state religion.
Divisive rhetoric and hate speech directed at vulnerable groups is a tactic meant to divert us from dealing with the issues that we all face. I do not engage in rhetoric that serves to divide us or alienate us from each other.
To address our issues, we must be able to work together. We are all Americans.
My Legislative Priorities:
Restore affordable homeowner’s insurance to Floridians.
Ensure access to affordable housing.
Protect reproductive health care for women, including access to safe and legal abortion.
Restore the ability of local governments to regulate real estate development, landscape practices, clean air and water.
Keep political partisanship, religion, and culture wars out of public education.
Promote a strong, public education system.
Establish minimum extreme heat health and safety standards for outdoor workers.
Expand Medicaid for working families and families of our Veterans.
Develop resiliency for communities vulnerable to disastrous storms and flooding caused by climate change.
End harmful agricultural and energy practices that contribute to climate change by promoting sustainable alternatives and investing in clean energy.
Stop air and water pollution at its source.
Enact our Right to Clean Water into the Florida Constitution.
If elected, I will become your Pasco County neighbor, and work hard to represent you in the Florida State House.
