Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
Usually I write these intros a few days before Friday. This week, however, the debate is taking place the night before. Shouldn’t I be commenting on it? Should I prepare two different versions, like Eisenhower did before D-Day — one where we win, one where President Biden falters?
Alas, this was the one where President Biden faltered. And the media failed us because it did not contradict tRump’s many lies.
And I admit I am scared. It’s ok to be scared.
Hiding under the covers will not make tRump and maga go away. Fighting him will. So I just donated to President Biden.
Because we know what the stakes are, for women, for children, yes, for men as well. The country needs us. The planet needs us.
So, if you’re feeling afraid, accept that fear and use it to motivate you. (And if you’re not, then use your emotions to motivate others.)
Come up with a few things you can do to make sure we win in November. Donate. Register voters. Postcard. Put up signs.
No matter what happens, I’m ridin’ with Biden. Come on in and see some of the good things going on in the world.
Regular Scheduled Programming
No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

👎 US bans Kaspersky software Jessica Lyons, The Register
The Biden administration today banned the sale of Kaspersky Lab products and services in the United States, declaring the Russian biz a national security risk.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced the crackdown today during a call with reporters. "Russia has shown it has the capacity – and even more than that, the intent – to exploit Russian companies like Kaspersky to collect and weaponize the personal information of Americans," Raimondo told assembled hacks.
Under the prohibition, Uncle Sam will block the sale of Kaspersky software in the US to new customers beginning July 20 – and also ban the antivirus maker from distributing software updates and malware signatures to existing Stateside customers after September 29.
Raimondo said Kaspersky, based in Moscow, is basically at the mercy of Putin, and with its tools installed all over American computers, the antivirus maker could – ironically enough – be ordered or forced to act as a conduit into those systems by the Kremlin.
Glad this is happening before the election. Should have happened last year, IMHO, but I hope it’s not too late.

Party of pedophiles. Here’s the latest Matthew Chapman, Raw Story
A former Republican county official in South Dakota has pleaded no contest to charges of possessing illegal images of children.
According to KELO, way back in 2022, Rocky Hayes came under suspicion when "authorities searched his Lincoln County home after receiving a cyber tip that he possessed an illegal video of a child being raped. According to the Secretary of State’s office, Hayes used to run at least three businesses out of his home. But since the original charges were filed, the internet appears to have been scrubbed of information and photos of Hayes. When DCI agents searched Hayes’s home office, court documents say they found two more illegal videos."

DeSantis vetoes bill that would mean letting people know if the water is polluted Matthew Chapman, Raw Story
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is under fire for vetoing a bipartisan bill that would have alerted beachgoers in his state when there are dangerous water quality issues, the Tampa Bay Timesreported on Thursday.
Compare this to the work that Biden and Harris have done by controlling bad chemicals and replacing lead pipes.

More than 1Million pensions protected! White House Briefing Room
Today in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Senator Bob Casey and Senior Advisor to the President and White House American Rescue Plan Coordinator Gene Sperling were joined by Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) President Anthony Shelton and workers and retirees from BCTGM Locals 464 and 6 to announce American Rescue Plan (ARP) assistance that will prevent benefit cuts for the roughly 103,000 workers and retirees—including over 6,700 in Pennsylvania—who earned these pension benefits over years or even decades, and faced cuts through no fault of their own. This is the second largest award to date through the American Rescue Plan’s Butch Lewis Act. This announcement brings the total number of pensions protected by the American Rescue Plan to over 1 million, including over 52,000 Pennsylvanians, 71,000 Illinoisans, 71,000 New Yorkers, 62,000 Ohioans, 61,000 Michiganders, 39,000 Missourians, 33,000 Wisconsinites and many more.
Today’s Announcement Protects the Earned Pensions of more than 103,000 Union Workers and Retirees from Devastating 45% cuts: Prior to passage of the ARP, the Bakery and Confectionery Union and Industry International Pension Fund was one of the largest financially distressed multiemployer pension plans in the nation. Workers in this plan include manufacturing, production, maintenance and sanitation workers in the baking and confectionery industries.
Without the historic support to protect workers’ pension benefits included in President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, these workers and retirees—who have already earned these benefits—would have faced estimated benefit reductions of roughly 45% by the end of the decade. Instead, thanks to ARP, the plan will now be projected to pay full benefits to workers and retirees through at least 2051.
Today Marks Over One Million Workers and Retirees Protected to Date Thanks to President Biden Including this Protection into the American Rescue Plan: Administered by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), the ARP’s Special Financial Assistance program—known as the “Butch Lewis Act” for the heroic Ohio union leader and pension advocate—will provided security for roughly 200 distressed multiemployer pension plans to ensure roughly 2 million workers’ pension plans remain solvent and will be able to pay the full benefits that workers have earned over the next several decades. These workers and their unions made the tough choice to take less wages in their working years to ensure that they could have the resources for a strong, dignified retirement. At no fault of their own, these workers on average faced devastating cuts—on average 37%—before the passage of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan.
With today’s announcement, the Biden Harris Administration has:
- Delivered assistance to 83 pension plans covering over one million workers and retirees. Multiemployer plans that receive assistance are projected to remain solvent through at least 2051—with no cuts to earned benefits.
- Prevented deep cuts of 37% on average: On average, those workers and retirees experienced or faced projected cuts of 37% of their earned benefits prior to ARP Special Financial Assistance. Over half of those 1 million workers or retirees had already experienced or faced projected benefit cuts of greater than 40% on average.
- Avoided imminent cuts: Over half of those million workers and retirees are in pension plans that had already cut benefits or were projected to become insolvent by the end of 2025.
- Restored Harsh Pension Benefit Cuts That Had Already Been Made for Tens of Thousands of Retirees in 36 Multiemployer Plans. For most workers and retirees, President Biden’s plan protected them from dire cuts and insolvency that was soon to come. Prior to enactment of the ARP, however, 36 such plans covering 120,000 workers and retirees already had suffered deep cuts due to their pension plans becoming insolvent or under the Multiemployer Pension Reform Act (MPRA) in order to avoid future pension plan insolvency. Thanks to ARP Special Financial Assistance, benefit levels in these plans have been restored and retirees have been made whole, on average restoring several thousands of dollars of lost benefits.
- Supported union workers and retirees across many industries, including:
- Over 500,000 workers and retirees in Teamsters union pension plans
- Over 120,000 workers and retirees in United Food and Commercial Workers pension plans
- Over 110,000 workers and retirees in United Steelworkers and United Auto Workers pension plans
- Over 100,000 workers and retirees in Bakery and Confectionery Workers union plans
- Over 50,000 workers and retirees in Communications Workers of America union plans
- Protected workers’ and retirees’ earned benefits across the country. The 20 states with the most workers and retirees benefitting from American Rescue Plan pension relief:
Illegal border crossings are way down: FUN FACT: After President Biden's decisive executive order addressing the border, illegal crossings have plummeted by 40%.It should be noted that President Biden preferred to sign the bipartisan border into law, which would have done even more, but trump told his GOP lackeys to kill the bill.Once again, Democrats are getting it done because Republicans refuse to.
Harris told me her campus visits have been standing room only, with overflow rooms. “Students stood in line for hours,” she said, “not for a rock concert, but to have a conversations with the vice president.” Contrary to the impression that Gen Z voters are disengaged, she came away “inspired” and more certain that they will mark a “sea change” in politics. Guns, abortion rights and climate are not academic issues to this generation. “It is a lived experience. In the height of their reproductive years, the Supreme Court took away the right to make decisions about their own body. . . . They understand we need practical solutions.”
Observing Harris last week, I could see the extent of her political maturation since her first year in office, when withering and often baseless criticism dominated coverage. Her delivery is crisp and authoritative. She appears relaxed, confident and centered in formal and informal settings. And she appears to relish taking on bullies. She can draw on not only three years of experience as vice president but 20 years or so as a prosecutor. “There are very few things I do now that I have not done over [that time],” she told me, pointing to a career that’s ranged from working as a line prosecutor to running the San Francisco agency for abused and neglected children to serving as California Attorney General and then its senator.
Certainly, since Dobbs, she has been channeling righteous anger and wielding a sharper message, acting as the most active and effective administration voice on the subject. To mark Dobbs’s second anniversary, the administration unsurprisingly has put her front and center. She has never been under any illusion that the court would stop at abortion. In the decision, she told me, “Clarence Thomas said the quiet part out loud.” He and other justices have their eye on Griswold (contraception) and Obergefell (same-sex marriage).

Support from some atypical places: Chief Executive Leadership Institute CEO Jeffrey Sonnenfeld: There are no Fortune 500 CEOs who are supporting Trump. That is a historic break. The Trump economic package frightens them. It's extremely inflationary. It'll lead to an increase in inflation and plunge the GDP. They'll be Biden voters. Voting rights. This may be the biggest issue threatening our democracy right now. Besides contacting your representatives at the state and federal level to do the right thing (depending on who they are), you can support and contact these organizations:

🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.
🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.

Grand jury indicts those trying to bribe a juror Deena Winter Minnesota Review
A federal grand jury Wednesday indicted five people for attempting to bribe a juror in the Feeding Our Future fraud trial, in a case that is likely to raise questions about juror security in high-profile criminal trials.
Three of the people charged with bribery were on trial for stealing $49 million from a federal program intended to feed hungry children in what’s become known as the Feeding Our Future scandal; a fourth is the brother of two defendants; the fifth is a Seattle woman recruited to bribe a juror, prosecutors said.
U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger called it a “chilling attack on our justice system” and an elaborate scheme to infiltrate the jury — akin to those he saw years ago as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn where he worked to dismantle mafia families. ✂️
The night before the jury was set to begin deliberations in the first Feeding Our Future case to go to trial, a woman dropped off a gift bag with $120,000 in cash at a juror’s home in Spring Lake Park. The juror called 911 and reported it to the Spring Lake Park Police Department and was later excused from jury duty by U.S. District Judge Nancy Brasel, who said the juror was “terrified.”
Well done to the juror for calling the police.
Latest recovery ever in civil forfeiture Justice Press Release
The Justice Department announced today that it has reached an agreement with Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, members of his family, and trust entities Low established (collectively, the “Low Parties”) that resolves two civil forfeiture cases.
The department previously brought the cases against assets that it alleges were acquired by Low and his family using funds allegedly embezzled from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Malaysia’s sovereign investment development fund. The Low Parties have also agreed to cooperate in the transfer to Malaysia of certain other assets located in Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Singapore that are linked to 1MDB funds. Under the agreement, the department will coordinate with foreign partners to facilitate the liquidation and return of these assets to Malaysia.
According to the civil forfeiture complaints, from 2009 through 2015, more than $4.5 billion in funds belonging to 1MDB were allegedly misappropriated by high-level officials of 1MDB and their associates, including Low, through a criminal conspiracy involving international money laundering and bribery. 1MDB was created by the government of Malaysia to promote economic development in Malaysia through global partnerships and foreign direct investment. Its funds were intended to be used to improve the well-being of the Malaysian people.
The agreement resolves the civil forfeiture action against a luxury apartment in Paris and artwork located in Switzerland by artists Andy Warhol and Claude Monet, which Low purchased for approximately $35 million in total. In addition, parties agreed to return to Malaysia real property and cash in bank accounts valued at approximately $67 million located in Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Singapore. The United States will release a total of $3.5 million to the trust entities to pay for legal fees and costs associated with the properties. Under the agreement, none of these fees may be returned to Low or his family members.
Prior to this settlement, in total, the United States has returned or assisted in the return to Malaysia of over $1.4 billion in assets associated with the international money laundering, embezzlement, and bribery scheme.
Low separately faces charges in the Eastern District of New York for allegedly conspiring to launder billions of dollars embezzled from 1MDB and for conspiring to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act by allegedly paying bribes to various Malaysian and Emirati officials, and in the District of Columbia for allegedly conspiring to make and conceal foreign and conduit campaign contributions during the United States presidential election in 2012. This agreement does not release any entity or individual from filed or potential criminal charges.
The FBI’s International Corruption Squads in New York City and Los Angeles and IRS Criminal Investigation are investigating the case.

Litter picking man gets others to join him: cleans up the area and clears up his heart Good News Network
Mike Scotland began experiencing depression in his late 20s. After struggling for some time, he found himself by the bank of the River Don in his hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland, surrounded by litter and ready to take his own life.
Thankfully, his mind was changed—but whenever Mike would pass the river, a known local dumping ground, the rubbish would remind him of that dark day. So he decided to take matters into his own hands. ✂️
“One day, I took three black bags and went down to the riverside and just started picking up litter.
“There was a person on a bike that stopped me and asked me what I was doing. I told him I was litter picking and he asked if I wanted a hand.
“He parked his bike, and me and this guy ended up spending the next couple of hours picking up litter together and having the most open and honest chats about anything and everything. ✂️
Mike is now a father of three and says the whole family now picks up litter regularly, especially his five-year-old son, Lucio, who picked up his first piece of trash as a toddler.
“I remember taking my son to the park when he was 18 months old, and he spotted an empty bottle. Even then, he went and picked it up and put it in the bin.”
The article also talks about how others join in, how otters have come back. And I thought of our own Wolvie, who picks up litter when she walks.
Some people can get out of their depression by doing things for others. By loving, you can become lovable.

Global survey: 80% of people want more done on the climate Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch
According to a new global survey of 75,000 people — Peoples’ Climate Vote 2024 — 80 percent want their governments’ climate commitments to be stronger.
The poll, conducted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), GeoPoll and Oxford University, posed 15 questions via telephone to residents of 77 countries that represented 87 percent of the global population, reported AFP.
“The Peoples’ Climate Vote is loud and clear. Global citizens want their leaders to transcend their differences, to act now and to act boldly to fight the climate crisis,” said Achim Steiner, UNDP administrator, in a press release from UNDP. “The survey results – unprecedented in their coverage – reveal a level of consensus that is truly astonishing. We urge leaders and policymakers to take note, especially as countries develop their next round of climate action pledges – or ‘nationally determined contributions’ under the Paris Agreement. This is an issue that almost everyone, everywhere, can agree on.”
EU more climate friendly! NEW: Renewables made up a record 44.7% of EU electricity generation in 2023, says @EU_Eurostat, with fossil fuels contributing a record-low 32.5% 1,210TWh renewables (+12%) 880TWh fossil fuels (-20%) 620TWh nuclear (+1%)
I bet this doesn’t capture all the renewables, e.g. balcony solar panels like those we installed. And, true, I don’t live in the EU. But I think the home renewables not in the system are one reason we see that -20%.
🍍 Hawai’i agrees to decarbonize its transportation Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch
On Thursday, Hawaii agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by 13 young people alleging the state had violated their constitutional rights with infrastructure that adds to greenhouse (GHG) emissions, exacerbating climate change.
In the settlement, the state agreed to decarbonize its transportation system by 2045.
At a news conference, Governor of Hawaii Josh Green, a Democrat, called the settlement “groundbreaking,” reported Reuters.
“We’re addressing the impacts of climate change today, and needless to say, this is a priority because we know now that climate change is here,” Green said, as Reuters reported. “It is not something that we’re considering in an abstract way in the future.”
