You can describe the first Biden / Trump debate by a story that Chinese police seized a 20-yr-old hand grenade that an elderly person used as hammer.
Pretty much how Trump will be declared a first debate winner, framed by a history of incumbents’ first debate failures. The problem will be that the proposed September 7 debate might not ever happen.
Trump remains forever a pathologically lying rapist / criminal.
In one of his more energetic and clear moments, Biden responded to a question about his age by pointing out that Donald Trump is only three years younger than he is, “and a lot less competent”. That may be true, but Trump – the convicted felon who has been found liable for sexual assault, was impeached twice, and attempted to overturn the last election when he lost – was forceful, alert, and on message, even as he repeatedly lied.
In contrast, when the cameras cut to Biden, he was often slack-jawed, his eyes unfocused, seeming to stare into the middle distance with a look of vacant horror. The contrast was stark. Many of the liberal-leaning voters watching no doubt despaired at Biden’s performance, which they feared would permanently cement the popular opinion that he is simply too old for the job.
He may well be. Even in response to what should have been easy questions, Biden fumbled. He frequently failed to remember words; he often seemed to lose his trail of thought, his voice quieting into silence. When asked about abortion rights – the issue that polls show is his most favorable contrast to Trump and his best chance to win in November – Biden described his preferred abortion rights regime as one in which “you go to see a doctor and have him decide if you need help or not” – a scene that relegates women to supplicants, begging for relief from male authorities, rather than citizens endowed with an entitlement to control their bodies and lives in their own right.
Later, when Trump characterized Biden as a criminal, Biden defended his own actions, instead of simply pointing out that it is Donald Trump who is a convicted felon and emphasizing the simple, persuasive core argument for his own re-election: that Trump is a mendacious criminal who will ban abortion and destroy the democratic system of government in pursuit of his own interests.

We’ll know a lot more after Trump’s sentenced. Doubtless the DNC has a Plan B for the convention.
FACT CHECK: Trump falsely claims “everybody” wanted abortion back to go the states
Former President Donald Trump repeated his frequent claim that “everybody” wanted Roe v. Wade overturned and the power to set abortion policy returned to individual states.
Facts First: Trump’s claim is false. Poll after poll has shown that most Americans – two-thirds or nearly two-thirds of respondents in multiple polls – wish Roe would have been preserved.
For example, a CNN poll conducted by SSRS in April 2024 found 65% of adults opposed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe. That’s nearly identical to the result of a CNN poll conducted by SSRS in July 2022, the month after the decision. Similarly, a Marquette Law School poll in February 2024 found 67% of adults opposed the decision that overturned Roe.
A NBC News poll in June 2023 found 61% opposition among registered voters to the decision that overturned Roe. A Gallup poll in May 2023 found 61% of adults called the decision a bad thing.
Many legal scholars had also wanted Roe preserved, as several of them told CNN when Trump made a similar claim and said, “all legal scholars, both sides, wanted and, in fact, demanded be ended: Roe v. Wade” in April.
...
It is true that some legal scholars who support abortion rights wished that Roe had been written differently; the late liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was one of them. But Ziegler noted that although “there was a cottage industry of legal scholars kind of rewriting Roe – ‘what Roe should’ve said’ — that isn’t saying Roe should’ve been overturned. Those are very different things.”
