Hurricane Beryl was just designated a hurricane at 5:00 pm, Beryl is the farthest east a hurricane has ever formed in the month of June. The last one to have formed farthest east in June was the Trinidad hurricane of 1933. There is an area between Africa and the Caribbean that is known as the Main Development Region (MDR) and this is where a lot of storms are formed. The water in the MDR gets very warm in late August through October but this year it’s different. The waters in the MDR are already at temperatures that would be seen in September.
This doesn’t happen in June, not in this area. This is what we see in September, not now.
There have only been 2 major hurricanes to form in June, Audrey in 1957 and Alma in 1966. Neither of these formed in the MDR, they both formed in the Gulf of Mexico.
At 8:00am the NHC declared Beryl a Cat 3 major hurricane. This is the earliest in the year a storm in the MDR becomes a major.
The second storm of the season and already breaking records, this will be one for the history books.
I hope it threads the needle between all the islands and no one gets hurt and damage is at the minimum.
