Dont Be Timid, Go After Trump’s Criminal Behavior
Attribution: Editorial & Political Cartoons, Gary Markstein, Creators Syndicate
Here’s a blunt message to Democratic politicians: be on the offensive and go after this scumbag — the same way Republicans would have excoriated a presumptive Democratic presidential nominee had that person been a convicted felon. Watch Professor Alan Lichtman, a Political Science professor at American University in Washington, DC, who predicts that "Trump’s guilty verdict will have ‘cataclysmic’ impact on the election outcome."
Remember This?
Play hardball politics. Set aside niceties and decorum. Let Joe Biden unleash his political surrogates on Trump. Don’t act like Dick Durbin, Chairman of the US Senate Judiciary Committee, who, for some inexplicable reason, refuses to investigate Sam Alito for his many conflicts of interest and blatant corruption. Timidity is something the Democratic Party can least afford now. If, as the party has stated on numerous occasions, “The future of democracy is on the ballot in 2024,” then it is time to act like it. No excuses.
You are clueless if you think domestic politics is about rational behavior. Those Americans who irrationally support Trump — regardless of the criminal evidence in front of them — will continue to do so. To expect such morons to, sooner or later, come to see the error of their ways is to expect a political miracle. It will not happen.
The 2024 GOP Presidential Nominee
Forget about Trump’s MAGA political base; they will never desert him. This election is about independent voters, some of whom are still undecided, and 49% of such voters believe Trump should withdraw from the race. It is also about other voters on the margins — just like the 2016 and 2020 Elections. A few thousand votes in key battleground states will likely decide the election. Hammer home your message again and again.
You do want to win the 2024 Election… right? Start acting like it.
Guilty, Guilty, Guilty!
Dan Pfeiffer: “The message is that Donald Trump is a danger to democracy, and he is running for president to help himself, avoid legal accountability, and punish his enemies. The fact that he was convicted of falsifying business records as part of a scheme to interfere in an election seems more than a little relevant.”
Brian Beutler: “In the almost 48 hours since a New York jury returned its verdict against Donald Trump, many liberals who are normally sanguine about the Democratic Party’s approach to partisan combat have found themselves astonished by what they’ve seen. As their response has taken shape, Democrats have revealed fundamental disunity over how and even whether to exploit the fact that their principal opponent is a convicted felon.”...
No rousing defense of the rule of law. No assertion that 34 felony convictions should be disqualifying for a major-party presidential nominee.
His Legacy
Something to consider from Molly Jong-Fast in the Atlantic magazine.
Not Gonna Work
Molly Jong-Fast: “If being a convicted felon is so great for Donald Trump, why are Republicans freaking out?”
It’s a testament to Donald Trump’s Teflon reputation that it took so long for him to become a convicted felon. No, it wasn’t the slates of fake electors or the refusal to return classified documents or the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct that ultimately ensnared him in a criminal trial. It was, instead, the falsification of business records that covered up a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. However, while felons in some cases cannot vote, they can still run for president. And if that felon happens to be Donald Trump, he can also have a chorus of powerful Republicans—who pretend to represent the party of “law and order”—debase themselves by angrily coming to his defense and assailing the legal system.
Indeed, hell hath no fury like Trumpworld when Trump is held responsible for his actions.

“False Bravado”— Trump’s Farewell Tour
Associated Press: “It’s a truism of the criminal justice system that defendants hoping for lenient treatment at their sentencing are expected to take responsibility for their actions, even express remorse. But that flies in the face of Trump’s longtime refusal to acknowledge any wrongdoing, a tone that he often strikes to portray strength and present himself as a fighter under ceaseless attack.”
“While the strategy may resonate with his most loyal political supporters, it failed during his New York criminal trial and could complicate his legal team’s efforts to avoid a tough sentence.”
Said law professor Jeffrey Cohen: “The fact, I think, that he has no remorse – quite the opposite, he continues to deny his guilt – is going to hurt him at sentencing. It’s one of the things that the judge can really point to that everybody is aware of — that he just denies this — and can use that as a strong basis for his sentence.”

Did Trump buy off witnesses who might have testified against him?
A ProPublica investigation details that his recent actions suggest just that.
“Nine witnesses in the criminal cases against former President Donald Trump have received significant financial benefits, including large raises from his campaign, severance packages, new jobs, and a grant of shares and cash from Trump’s media company,” ProPublica reports.
“The benefits have flowed from Trump’s businesses and campaign committees, according to a ProPublica analysis of public disclosures, court records and securities filings. One campaign aide had his average monthly pay double, from $26,000 to $53,500. Another employee got a $2 million severance package barring him from voluntarily cooperating with law enforcement. And one of the campaign’s top officials had her daughter hired onto the campaign staff, where she is now the fourth-highest-paid employee.”
“These pay increases and other benefits often came at delicate moments in the legal proceedings against Trump. One aide who was given a plum position on the board of Trump’s social media company, for example, got the seat after he was subpoenaed but before he testified.”
