Nevada is known as a bellwether state, a term I dislike. A wether is a castrated ram, and a bellwether is one wearing a bell, and set to lead a flock. That’s not fair to Nevadans, who actually know their own minds. It is much more correct to say that Nevada has been a swing state, gradually turning blue, and that as Nevada swings so do most other swing states.
Then there is the Trump era of chaos and internal Republican Civil War, building on decades of internecine (Yes, internecine, I say.) strife.
From Late Latin internecīnus “deadly”: inter (“between”), necō (“I kill”).

Renewable Monday: Nevada Elections have Consequences, Hooray!

The five newly elected women, all Democrats, who helped their party regain control of the Nevada Senate: Jessie Danielson (from left), holding daughter Isabelle Beth Kabza; Kerry Donovan, Brittany Pettersen, Tammy Story and Faith Winter
Nevada shows us what can happen when we put Democrats, particularly women, in charge. We tip the tipping point, and all of a sudden, everything seems to start improving at once. Renewables, EVs, buildings, jobs, the works. Now, if we can get the NV electric utilities to tap that clean-burning desert sun at scale…
Oh, hey!
EIA: Nevada State Profile and Energy Estimates
In 2023, renewable energy resources accounted for 39% of Nevada's total in-state electricity net generation. Utility-scale solar and small-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) together supplied about 26% of the state's total generation, while geothermal energy provided 10% and hydroelectric power 3%.40 Hoover Dam, one of the nation's largest hydroelectric dams, is on Nevada's border with Arizona and has power plants in both states. It accounted for 96% of Nevada's hydroelectric power generation in 2023.
Chaos: There’s a lot of it about. The MSM and the courts and the voters are taking note. Especially MSNBC. I have a draft story on that.
2024
May 6, 2024 — Last weekend, the Nevada GOP held their closed-to-press state convention that was dominated by Republican infighting and dangerous election conspiracy theories. Keynote speaker insurrectionist Scott Presler’s speech highlighted “persistence”, which the NVDems will be more than happy to help the Nevada GOP highlight. The NVGOP has been persistent in their unfounded claims of election denial and keeping those who still deny the results of the 2020 election in control of the party.
Indicted fake elector, Nevada GOP Chair, and “Trump’s man in Nevada” Michael McDonald gaveled in the meeting and chaos soon followed. Donald Trump endorsed at least two of the six now-indicted fake electors, who attempted to steal the 2020 election in favor of Trump, to be Nevada’s 2024 electors. Lombardo’s GOP re-elected indicted fake elector Jim DeGraffenreid and former Republican candidate for Attorney General Sigal Chattah, who said Nevada’s first-ever Black Attorney General should be “hanging from a f*cking crane” to the Republican National Committee.
Nevada Republican Party courting catastrophe with its chaotic caucuses
Jan 24, 2024 — As it turns out, the Republican Party was correct about a massive threat to election integrity in Nevada. The only problem, the state GOP is the source of the threat.
Leaders of the Nevada Republican Party not only insist on hosting private nominating parties that are gift-wrapped for disgraced former President Donald Trump, but they are also so incompetent and disorganized that they are failing to provide for even the most basic security of the electoral process.
Opinion: The chaos of Nevada’s primary shows the nominating process has to change
May 4, 2024 — As members of the Nevada Republican Party gather for their state convention, DNC spokesperson Stephanie Justice released the following
statement:
As if the Nevada GOP wasn’t already chock-full of extremists, Kash Patel and Scott Presler – two of Trump’s MAGA cronies – are slated to convene with Nevada’s Republicans this weekend. It’s on brand for the Nevada GOP that the best they have to show for themselves are the state’s top election deniers, a MAGA extremist who was on Capitol grounds during the January 6 insurrection, and someone who wants to ‘come after’ the media – and it only underlines to voters in the state that the Nevada Republican Party is too extreme and too out of touch for Nevadans.”
The Nevada GOP is led by Michael McDonald, who wanted to steal the election for Donald Trump (who later praised him for his efforts)
The GOP Campaign to Sow Chaos at the Ballot Box Has Already Begun
Jan 10, 2024 — Michigan, Florida, and Nevada are facing leadership crises heading into the 2024 elections. Nevada’s party leader was indicted last month for being a fake elector in the 2020 election.
Nevada GOP Chair Michael McDonald was one of six Republicans indicted in December for falsely pledging the state’s electoral votes to Trump in 2020. Trump narrowly lost to Biden and sought to overturn the results.
But despite the legal peril facing him, there has been little major pressure to turn over leadership. McDonald has been party chair for over a decade.
Nevada Republican Party caucus goes exactly as Nevada Republican Party planned: Trump wins
Feb 8, 2024 — Nevada's confusing and chaotic moment in the nation's presidential nomination process came to its inevitable end Thursday, with former President Donald Trump winning the Nevada Republican caucus, two days after a symbolic victory in a state-run primary.
Nikki Haley Rips GOP 'Chaos' After Losing Nevada Primary
Feb 7, 2024 — The former UN ambassador stated that the GOP has "imploded" and referred to the party's "chaos" in a post on social media.
Feb 6, 2024 — This year marks the first time Nevada will host a presidential preference primary as second in the nation in the Democratic nominating calendar.
State Republicans Bungle National Spotlight With Self-Inflicted Caucus Chaos
Meanwhile, the Nevada GOP fumbled their opportunity to organize their base and instead disenfranchised and confused their own voters all in order to rig the process for Donald Trump:
Nevada's primary and caucuses didn't change the race.
Feb 7, 2024 — The latest 2024 contests for Republicans are in Nevada this week, but things might be a little confusing for voters: There was a primary on Tuesday with former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley on the ballot, and there will be caucuses on Thursday with former President Donald Trump on the ballot. The only contest that will award delegates will be the caucuses.
Republicans scrutinize voting rolls and ramp up for mass challenges ahead of election
Apr 14, 2024 — Scott Hoen was surprised to be named in a lawsuit the Republican National Committee and the Nevada Republican Party filed last month against him, four other Nevada county clerks and the secretary of state. The lawsuit alleges that five localities had “inordinately high” voter registration rates, and that the state is violating federal law by not having what are known as “clean” voter rolls.
Jim Hartman: Nevada GOP's primary vs. caucus chaos
Jan 21, 2024 — If Nevadans want the saner choice of Nikki Haley, they can cast a ballot for her in the primary on Feb. 6.
Feb 7, 2024 — Even without Donald Trump on Nevada's Republican ballot, Nikki Haley was still denied her first victory.
June 12, 2024
Sam Brown to face Jacky Rosen in pivotal Nevada Senate race
Feb 9, 2024 — Duelling primary vote and caucuses meant Nikki Haley and Trump did not go head-to-head in the southwestern state.
Jun 6, 2024 — While Brown had been seen as the front-runner after narrowly losing the Senate primary in 2022, Gunter’s recent momentum could shake things up. Unfortunately, Gunter is a crackpot whose nomination would likely sacrifice the GOP’s viability in the race.
Nevada votes next, and again two days later. It's confusing.
Though the state party chair has said a caucus is the “purest” way to reach voters, Lombardo called dueling contests a continuation of chaos for Republicans.
Oct 31, 2023 — Gov. Joe Lombardo, a Republican, criticized rules for the Nevada Republican Party's Feb. 8 presidential caucus barring candidates from participating both in the caucus and in a state-run presidential primary two days earlier, saying it is “unacceptable for the voters.”
Though the state party chair has said a caucus is the “purest” way to reach voters, Lombardo called dueling contests a continuation of chaos for Republicans.
Nevada GOP leaders indicted in pro-Trump ‘fake elector’ case still in charge of caucus planning
Oct 19, 2023 — Nevada's lone congressional Republican remains clearly frustrated by the chaos enveloping the conference over the inability to get majority support for a speaker candidate and compared trying to get Republicans to agree on a plan moving forward to “herding cats.”
2022
Oct 21, 2022 — PAHRUMP, Nev. — If the midterm elections degenerate into chaos in a couple of weeks — a very real possibility — then Nevada is poised tole ad the way. Indeed, the chaos here has already begun.
The election supervisors in 10 of the state’s 17 counties have already quit, been forced out or announced their departures. Lower-level election workers have quit in the face of consistent abuse. The state’s elections staff has lost eight of its 12 employees.
Oct 15, 2021 — Republicans are in turmoil in a key battleground state. Nevada State GOP Chair Michael McDonald speaks.

'Chaos time': Reports on the ground suggest confusion at Nevada caucuses
Feb 23, 2016 — The Nevada Republican party pushed back Tuesday after widespread reports of chaos at caucus sites.
Feb 24, 2016 — Not enough ballots, too many ballots, voting twice, phantom caucus sites. Welcome to Nevada.
Feb 24, 2016 — Lines around the block. Reports of people voting twice. Ballot shortages. Not all of the state's caucuses started at the same time.
2012
Yes, these still turn up high in the Google hits for “Republican chaos Nevada”.
Feb 5, 2012 — To be honest, it didn’t exactly take a crystal ball to see this coming a mile away. You can say this about Nevada Republicans: they are consistent. They never blow an opportunity to blow an opportunity. And hoo-ahhh . . . did they ever blow this one!
Feb 5, 2012 — Texas Rep. Ron Paul vowed Sunday to press on with his long-shot campaign despite a disappointing third-place finish in the Nevada caucuses.
