As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Greetings friends, and welcome to another Saturday! We made it, though there was some doubt for a couple of days there. The power cord to our modem suffered a puppy-involved death, so we had to wait a few days for a replacement to arrive. Draco, about lost his mind. Normally I would have simply told him to wait a couple days and things would go back to normal, but to be honest? I couldn’t say he was wrong.
I knew there would be certain games we couldn’t play because they rely on the net, but when the platforms for those games make things harder by continuously trying to load, and flashing error messages because they can’t connect, there is a problem. When I can’t continue an ongoing writing project, because my word processor won’t load until it can connect to the net, there is a problem. Don’t get me wrong, I will be there first to admit that the internet has made the world a better, more connected place than it was when I was growing up, and I am not one of those people who pines for an idealistic past that never really existed in the first place. But I do think that software companies need to embrace the idea of an “offline mode” that will allow their software to be functional even when there are brief times of interrupted connectivity, so that we poor disadvantaged meat bags can continue to do the things that we need to do, even when the net is down for whatever reason. Worse yet, why do they have to make it so bloody difficult for us meat bags to shut down the offending software so that it doesnt keep taking up resources while refusing to function?
Interestingly enough, do you want to know the one piece of software that continued working, even without the net that it would normally rely on? My audible app, from amazon. I wasn’t able to download new books to read of course, but the app is designed to allow me to continue reading any books that I have already downloaded and have stored on my drive. I never thought I would be in a position to compliment Amazon, but here we are. :)
