Trump’s argument starts with the idea that when Putin saw the withdrawal from Afghanistan he became emboldened. In particular, that, now would be a good moment to move on Ukraine.
At around 28.57. “When Putin saw that he said you know what. I think we are going to go in (to Ukraine) and maybe take my — this was his dream. I talked to him about it. His dream.”
So Trump has admitted to having advance knowledge of Putin’s dream. It could appear that Trump was just as lackadaisical about trying to avoid this invasion as he was about trying to stop an insurrection. With the insurrection he dilly dallied for 187 minutes. Trump needs to provide answers about when he first heard Putin’s talking about invading Ukraine, who Trump informed of Putin’s intent, and if Trump did anything to try and dissuade Putin. Or, was it politically expedient that it happened on Biden’s watch.
We live in a world where there was a bipartisan proposal to secure the border with Mexico, but a solution was politically not to Trump’s advantage. So the proposal was aborted. Trump has used the invasion of Ukraine for political advantage — perhaps he could have used his political influence to avert a war crime. In Trump’s words “I talked to him about it”.
“I talked to him about it” and then he did — what? Doing nothing would not be Presidential.
