It’s not the debate folks. It’s the dogs!
These are my pups. We live 40 miles from the Canadian border. To cross the border and pick berries with the pups we need current rabies certificates. Fine! Got vax updates from the traveling vets who come here once a year or twice a year (good for three years) in March. Ready to go.
But wait.. CDC has issued new regs (effective Aug. 1, 2024) that say we can’t return home to the US without a whole bunch of other paperwork impossible to get in a rural Alaska town with no vet. Dog must be micro-chipped. Check with one dog. Not enough. Micro-chip must be registered and # recorded AT THE TIME of vaccination. Or dog must be re-vaxxed. Plus you need to have dog stuff registered with CDC.. opportunity available for that colossal mess July 15th for regs going into effect Aug. 1, 2024.
Rural Alaska border towns Haines and Skagway have no vets to do these things in the next two weeks. Peak travel time. Peak berry picking on the tundra time. Most people here go to Whitehorse to get their rabies vaccinations. That’s in Canada. Only problem is the US border for reentry, with these new regs, only accept US vaccinations. And records with micro-chip numbers made at the time of the vaccination. And you and your pet must also be REGISTERED WITH CDC!
Many border states of US/Canada are also swing states. And they are going to be pissed!
Angry at the bureaucrats who cannot be contacted.
Angry at Customs and Border Control who only know how to take orders not solve problems.
Angry at a “Contact White House” form that doesn’t work.
Angry at Congressional delegations who have no one to answer the phone.
Angry at CDC where there is no real person to talk to.
So far one Republican from NY gets it.. Langworthy Calls for Delay of New CDC Pet Travel Rule for Northern Border. chautauquatoday.com/…
Congressman Nick Langworthy is calling for an 18-month delay of the implementation of new CDC rules regarding pet travel at the U.S.-Canada border that will take effect on August 1st. The new rules will require all dogs entering the United States from Canada to be older than six months, "appear healthy," have a U.S. Department of Agriculture-endorsed export health certificate and a CDC-approved Dog Import form. In a letter to CDC Director Mandy Cohen, Langworthy called the new rules "incredibly ill-timed."
Langworthy says, "The CDC's new rule is incredibly ill-timed and will place a massive undue burden on responsible pet owners and travelers during our short peak travel season. Implementing such stringent requirements now could disrupt lives and negatively impact our local economy, which relies heavily on cross-border tourism and trade. I urge the Biden Administration to delay this rule for at least 18 months and consider a more balanced approach that safeguards public health without imposing unnecessary hardships."
In the letter, the Western New York Republican also expressed concern over the CDC Dog Import Form, as it has not yet been made publicly available, in addition to clear guidance on form submission requirements. He also highlighted issues with the public comment period as proposed exceptions for personally owned dogs were removed, leading to a limited response from those who did not believe they would be impacted.
Nothing is going to make people more angry right now than these new CDC regs. And the total inability for citizens to access a government person to discuss this issue or any other issue.
If anyone here has an inside track to POTUS, better let him know, it’s not going to be the debate that’s the problem. It’s CDC’s new regulations for pets crossing the border. Dogs matter!
Called border patrols in Haines, Skagway, and Anchorage. All bureaucrats.
We can get into Canada from our home here along the border but the US won’t let us back home?
Border Patrol Officers: We will be enforcing the rules. It’s on you to follow them!
Also Border Patrol Officers are not allowed to talk to anyone in the media about anything.
If you don’t follow CDC’s rules, your dog won’t be allowed to enter the United States. If denied entry, your dog will be sent back to the last country of departure at your expense. Country of departure is where the last trip originated—not where the dog was born or where it lives.
Here’s the link to the new regs: www.cdc.gov/...
Is there anyone who can get through to the Administration? To CDC Administrators? To Customs Officers? To Biden/Harris Administration? To CDC honchos?
We can cross into Canada with our current rabies vax certificates, but we can’t get back home?
Even if returning on the same day to the our own country where the dogs live and have a current rabies certificate?
It all makes no sense. But there you have it. This is the kind of craziness that is not going to help Biden or the Democrats.
