I recently read a diary on DK that explained that flying the U.S. flag has been co-opted by the right-wing of this country as their symbol of a full-throated desire to destroy democracy. That diarist said they’d basically be damn if they would allow that. They said they would fly the flag as their show of true American patriotism. I fully support them and admire them for doing so.
Before, I would only fly the flag on momentous days, such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Flag day and similar such days. My feeling was that to fly it continuously might invite people to think I was in the right-wing camp. I was at a loss as to how to combat this, even if done quietly so.
I realized that with the Supreme Court’s king-making ruling I had my own personal answer. I would fly both the current fifty-star flag and the colonist’s thirteen stars and stripes of our early statehood, and I would fly them continuously, day in and day out.
My hope is that people might wonder why was I doing that. If asked I could simply say that I believe in democracy and that my second flag was meant to show that I want to have freedom from any king, just as it was stated 248 years ago. I was meant not to be ruled by a king or the king’s royal court.
I’m a free man, and I stand with other free women and men in opposition to a king, just as they did almost 250 years ago.
