Whenever breaking news hits, there’s a mad scramble, in outlets across the world, to be the first with the most. But, as WNYC wrote in 2013, “In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.”
As Daily Kos continues its efforts to maintain a fact- and reality-based site, we thought it would be helpful to share the rest of this excellent guidance, in hopes it might be useful today and in the future.
As WNYC also notes, “[Y]ou are a repeater and reporter of information, both good and bad. It is up to you to apply scrutiny to the information you encounter to avoid passing amplifying the same bad information you hope to filter out.”
Please visit WNYX’s “Breaking News Consumer’s Handbook” here for expanded guidance. Please be extremely careful about only sharing reporting from legitimate sources. There will be a LOT of rumors and conspiracy theories. Let's be extremely careful about what we share and what we say.
Thank you.
