I don’t want to play speech police, but every time I see the United States Secret Service called “SS” in a diary or comment, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up (that’s probably because I’m German).
I’m sure that most of you know the differences, but let me quote briefly from their Wikipedia entries anyway:
The Schutzstaffel (SS; also stylised as ᛋᛋ with Armanen runes; German pronunciation: [ˈʃʊtsˌʃtafl̩]; lit. 'Protection Squadron') was a major paramilitary organisation under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany, and later throughout German-occupied Europe during World War II.
…
The SS was the organisation most responsible for the genocidal murder of an estimated 5.5 to 6 million Jews and millions of other victims during the Holocaust. Members of all of its branches committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during World War II (1939–45).

The United States Secret Service (USSS or Secret Service) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security with the purpose of conducting criminal investigations and protecting U.S. political leaders, their families, and visiting heads of state or government.

Though I assume, that no one here is intentionally trying to equate the two, it would still be polite and appropriate to take the time to add a "US" before the letters "SS". I’m pretty sure the women and men of the USSS would appreciate.
