First of all my thoughts go out to the people injured and killed last night. They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I grieve for their families as well and hope the two survivors recover.
The thought I had this morning dealt with Trump's reaction to the incident. This is, as far as we know, the first time he's ever actually been in danger in his life. We know he has an overdeveloped sense of self preservation and values his safety above pretty much anything else.
Up until now, between Project 2025 and his statements, there has been a disturbing theme running through of establishing an authoritarian government. People have also been worried about the effect on elections in 2028 if he wins next November.
In previous comments I have posted that the United States doesn't have a history of doing well with that type of government or societal structure. We tend to be fairly contrary to it.
I truly wonder if Trump is giving any thoughts to the downside of being the figurehead for that government. I think that this incident alone demonstrates that there are a relatively large number of armed people on both sides that have a serious problem accepting the concepts the Republicans are putting forward. In the United States a dictator seems to basically be a large target for a heavily armed population. We do have a history with removing Presidents over the last 200+ years.
Perhaps this will slow things down somewhat even if he does win. Unlike other more traditional dictatorships we don't all just sit back and watch.
It will be interesting to see what he is like after the obligatory RNC convention speeches.
