Ryan McBeth reviews some of the disinformation circulating around the shooting at the Trump rally yesterday. He points out influential people speculating about the shooting being staged (i.e. starting a conspiracy theory), along with altered photos that have circulated to support that idea. McBeth is an army veteran, and emphasizes the importance of expertise in evaluating evidence (which is a pet peeve of his, noting that many reporters opine confidently on military matters despite having no military experience).
If you look over on “X”, you’ll see that it’s swamped in nascent conspiracy theories about the shooting. On one hand, there’s the assertion that it was staged to help Trump’s campaign, and on the other is accusations that the Secret Service was in on the assassination attempt. Both of which are absolutely ridiculous, but one of them is being promoted by the owner/editor, just like a bunch of other instances of misinformation, racism, and fascism that are the norm over there.
