I just saw this on the local NBC website, I don't have a lot of time, so I'll just get this out and delete when a diary with more info is available:
WTMJ4 Deadly shooting by out-of -town officer at 14th and Vliet in Milwaukee.
The very brief story quotes witnesses who saw a man walking across the street, and officers followed and shot him in the back.
"They say they heard anywhere from six or seven shots fired, and that possibly multiple officers fired their weapons."
Story says the man lives in a homeless encampment near there, which is a few blocks from the RNC perimeter.
In the video, the reporter says the officer involved was from Ohio.
More info now than when I first saw that link:
Sources tell TMJ4 that two men were fighting with knives at the scene…
..Columbus ..Officers, along with officers from multiple jurisdictions nationwide are in Milwaukee to support Milwaukee Police with security for the RNC.
14th and Vliet is near the secure zone of the RNC, but we have no reason to believe this incident is connected to events at the RNC…
Edited to add:
Conflicting accounts, with some witnesses quoted as saying he was threatening officers with a knife, and other witnesses saying he was shot in the back while crossing the street.
Edited to add ACLU statement:
“We are aware of the fatal civilian shooting by Columbus, Ohio Police that took place in the King Park neighborhood, approximately a mile away from the Fiserv Forum, well outside of the RNC security perimeter. As we wait for more details to surface, we're calling for a full and transparent investigation into what exactly led to the shooting, including the swift release of any bodycam footage pertaining to the encounter. More than 4,000 additional law enforcement officials are in Milwaukee for the RNC, and we've long feared how this heavy police presence could increase the risk of deadly police encounters, especially by out-of-state officers who don’t know and aren’t accountable to our community. We offer our condolences to the friends and family of the person killed.”
